Package servers and downloading from closest package server

This issue has been solved. See solution.

With NS7,

I have a couple sites configured..A and B.

Both have a Windows 2003 file server, the Altiris agent and have been setup as Site servers with package service. Each server has completed getting all packages from the NS server. This is shown via the Agent.

Each site has been setup with a "Site" and has the subnet defined, as well as the Site Server defined.

Now I want to know what a client considers when it gets an agent pushed to it, with the closest package server option ticked.

Site A is setup the same as Site B but for some reason it will not download from the local package server. It always goes back to the NS server. Have been trying to trouble shoot this for the past few days with no luck..

ONly thing I can think of is that Site B has software management/delivery solutions installed...Does the closest package server require these??

Cheers

Ok found my issue, it was to

Ok found my issue, it was to do with IIS on the server.

Since im testing, I've been removing and reinstalling the agent/package service and after checking the IIS config manager the Altiris setup in there is pointing to an old location.

Im assuming that once I sort this issue out, that will fix my issues since the push/pull of the agent is done via HTTP from the package server..

Will update with results.

It sounds like you have everything (the theory)

down and understood. In v7 the site servers do require IIS, so if you get that issue fixed you should be fine.

Yes, you can install (a bit of clarification)

"Package" services on a box, but not "Task" services. In v6 there was an Altiris HTTP service that could be used in place of IIS, but that is not available or supported in v7. And both services are required to be considered a "site" server.

Fixed

That was my issue, IIS on the servers.

Also ensure that IIS is properly configured and pointing to the correct path that Altiris has in there. Due to a path change between agent installs/uninstall (due to testing) the IIS path was NOT updated either and pointing to an older location. Something to be aware of.

Yeah its a little unclear because when adding a new site server it actually allows you to install the package service (which I thought would serve out the agent to closest clients) - but since no IIS installed..it wasn't happening.

When you go to setup a site server, if task service is unavailable it means the server doesn't have IIS installed..

So my issue is resolved. Thanks for the information Jim. Been a great help.
