Packaging of msi using linux
Created: 13 Dec 2010 | 4 comments
Hi there.
Is there a way to pack a msi in linux using wise?
At the moment I am running a batch file under windows which would call the wfwi.exe to compile a msi package.
Now the process of compiling the msi shall be done on a linux server.
The msi cannot be pre-packed as some files will differ depending on who wants to download them (personalization).
I have already read about wine which should run windows programs on linux, but I do not know if wise would run this way.
Any help appreciated,
cheers.

I do not recall any previous discussions on the possibility of running Wise under Wine, so unless another forum member has tried it and can advise you further, the only answer is to try it yourself.

I have tried in the past to install Wise under Wine, but was not successful. If I remember correctly, there were problems with the .NET parts. I never got it to run.
However, later versions of Wine have received a lot of improvements in the MSI area. The automation interface is possible to use (I requested a feature once that actually got implemented).
I would look into WiX also (but Wine has still to be used partly). The first search on google turned up this:
http://live.gnome.org/GTK+/Win32/WiX

Hi!
Thanks so far for your answers. I have taken a look at Wine, Mono, Wix... Seems really complicated ;) Also this might not really fit here, but has any of you guys heard of any other (more native) tool which would create msi files under linux (e.g. from xml files). I know its a long shot, as of course msi files do not belong on linux ;) [And yes I have searched google all over but did not find anything really helpful]
Anyhow, I'll might give it a try, though I have no linux server at hand in the moment to test wise + mono + wix.
Thanks!
PS: One other thing. I tried to login with opera serveral times but every time I do so I get directly logged out... wired?
If I recall correctly,
If I recall correctly, Installsite.org offered two utilities MSI2XML and XML2MSI, but as to whether you can run them on Linux, I don't know. Googling should give you an answer.
It seems to me that this all represents a lot of work for not much return, but if you enjoy a challenge then you should have a good time with this one.
Regarding your last PS:
Where exactly were you trying to login? Was it to Connect? If so, what version of Opera are you running, what operating system are you running it on, do you have cookies enabled, do you have any non-standard security settings? I can pass on details of your issues to the Connect developers, but they will want lots of detail as you can't easily fix what can't be reproduced. What is wired? Is this an acronym?
