  • 1.  Parent \ Child Hierarchy Replication

I have two SMP SP5 servers (7.0.8641) running on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2.

I've established a parent \ child relationship between the two and replication appears to be working. I have clients that can connect to either of the two servers, and this also appears successful. The configuration requests are being recorded and tasks can be executed successfully; from either server.

However, I was expecting that replication would allow the child server clients to be available from the parent server. At the moment I have two management points for the clients depending on which server they connect to.

The default replication rules are in place, ie. computer resources should replicate up the hierarchy, but this doesn't seem to be happening. Policies and filters are moving down the hierarchy OK, in fact looking at the status reports, downwards is the only way the replication is going. Does anyone have any ideas why it might not be working or where i can look for clues.

    Thanks in advance.

that you expect the child server clients to be available, do you mean, that the clients can point to and be managed by either server? This is a bit of a misconception, as the clients can point to one server (the child) and have their information available on the parent. In addition their policies can originate on the parent, and be transferred to the child server, but the actual management still comes from the child.

Thanks for the response. I understand that a client can only connect to one server, its just that i was expecting to see the client details from the child listed in the parent server. So information such as inventory and reporting tasks were available from the one management point.

I can see policies and filters that have been replicated from the parent, and are now available on the child, but nothing seems to be moving back up the hierarchy. So its this failure of information moving back up to the parent that i need to get resolved.

I misunderstood your comment. The inventory data should replicate up. The first place I would start are the reports for hierarchy, there should be some that indicate success\failure.

It should work out of box, but try to create a replication rule (Settings> All Settings> Notification Server> Replication> Resrouces> New Replication Rule)

Here you can specify the data classes you want to replicate and the destination.

Also, confirm that your software tasks have replicated properly.  In multiple NS environments, software\patch tasks dont always replicate properly.
