  • 1.  Patch Management - Patches report as staged but have not downloaded

    Posted Oct 01, 2009 05:26 AM
    Hi,

    I am using Patch Management on NS 6.0.6074 SP3 + R8.

I am having difficulty with downloading various Microsoft patches. I have just setup the NS and Patch Management server so I have attempted to download all of the MS patches at the same time. The majority of the patch downloads have finally completed. The patches would only download for about an hour and then would completely stop. I would either have to kick start the download process by setting a patch to be staged again which would in turn allow the other patches to continue to download, or I would have to restart the NS server which resumed the downloads. There are some patches though which report as being staged but do not appear in the Updates folder. The Downloaded column reports as 0. I have attempted to disable and then stage the update again however it will still not download.

What can I do to get the updates to download.

    Many thanks,

    Ben

If a bulletin is 'staged' then a 'Recreate Packages' right-click option should appear.  Do you see that at all?

...is there a reason you're downloading "All" patches, instead of just the current ones?  I made the same mistake when we set up Patch Managemetn for the first time; there's no need to download patches which are superseded.

The easiest way to do this is to load the Manage Software Updates tool, and set the "Show" drop-down to "Superseded Bulletin Summary", and set the "Supersedence Status" to "Superseded".  When the report refreshes, right-click on any Bulletin which is shown and select "Disable".  You can multi-select (via Shift-click or drag-selecting) and disable them all at once.

Also..it could be you've hit a particularly "big" patch.  There were some earlier this year (or last year?) that were several hundred MB.  I think they were Visual Studio patches or something.<o p=""></o>

    Thanks for your replies.

There are five patches which have failed to download, none of which seem to be large.

I do have the Recreate Packages right click option which shows the popup box "Recreating Packages." The task completes but the patch does not appear in the updates folder.

After reading another post I deleted the patch exe's relating to one of the patches. I did this by right clicking on the patch under the Manage Software Updates view, selected List Software Updates and then deleted the exe. The List Software Updates page also showed under the Download Succeeded column that the download had failed. Unfortunately doing this has removed any reference of the patch from the Manage Software Updates view - ie the patch is no longer listed in Patch Management. I've run the Microsoft Patch Management Import task under the configuration tab but it still does not appear.

I agree that it may not be necessary to download superseded patches, but I would still like to have them all and doesn’t address that this may happen for future updates which are required.

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ben

I've taken a look at the logs on the Notification Server folder and can see that there is a 404 error relating to the downloads. I am able to naviage to this URL however and download the patches manually.

The patches are MS99-049, MS01-019, KB-929058 and MS08-077. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?

    Thanks,
    Ben
