We have SEP (version 12.1.4013.4013) running on our Windows 8 pc's.

Now when we open an attachment in Outlook 2013 (for example a 1MB jpg) the PC freezes (100% Disk) for a couple of minutes before the attachment is opened.

When we disable SEP the attachment is opened immediately without any problems.

Any idea how we can fix this?

Have you tried with the latest version, 12.1.5? You're running a couple versions behind. The Outlook plugin has had issues like this in the past.

My other question is, do you have other email security in place at your perimeter? If so, you don't need to enable this component at the endpoint.

The Outlook plugin is not very configurable. If issues continue to persist, it will need to be disabled for the time being and you're best off opening a support case so they can troubleshoot this.

The one configurable option is to scan only certain file extensions. You may want to select only the more dangerous extensions such as .exe, .scr, .bat or .com to be scanned.

You can try to install latest SEP 12.1.5 version.

Disable the outlook plug in.. or else remove the outlook/email feature from the client.

We didn't have tried 12.1.5 yet but we have a Barracuda Spam Firewall with also a plugin in outlook.

In this case, since you have perimeter protection, there is no need for it to be enabled at the endpoint level. It's essentially doing double scanning then.

Its better you dont install this feature.. 

Remove the email feature off SEP from a test client & then check.
