Started getting liveupdate installs of PCA 12.5.1 build 500 from build 486.  Anyone know anything about 500?  Is there a stand alone installer for it?  I cannot find ANYTHING about this build anywhere.

thanks

I just noticed the same thing

I just noticed the same thing but I can't find any info on it. I found the files on my Win7 machine at C:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Downloads with the name 1327285461jtun_pca_securityfix_500.zip. They may have come up with a fix for this http://www.symantec.com/connect/sites/default/files/pcAnywhere%20Security%20Recommendations%20WP_01_23_Final.pdf but just aren't telling anyone. I hope it doesn't break anything.

Build 500 is the Hotfix TECH179526

Build 500 is the Hotfix TECH179526

Check the bottom of the following page in the 'verification' section for build updates after the hotfix

Yep once you are at build 486 (sp3) then there is a new hot fix.

Dassiq has the correct info but the link didn't work for me.  Here is the shorter version of the link.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH179526

This is a hot fix that can be applied to all versions of pcAnywhere 12.5 box and all versions of pcAnywhere solution.   The best bet would be to update all the way to 12.5.1 build 486 and then apply the hotfix that will change your awhlogon.dll  to the 500 build.

Verifying the update

To verify the update, check the file version of C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\awhlogon.dll as follows:

  • On computers with a 64-bit version of Windows, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\pcAnywhere.
  • Your install path is different if a non-default location was used.
  • Use the following tables to figure out what version the file should be after the update.

pcAnywhere

  GA SP1 SP2 SP3
12.5 12.5.0.265 > 12.5.0.300 12.5.0.442 > 12.5.0.480 12.5.0.463 > 12.5.0.480 12.5.1.486 > 12.5.1.500
12.1 o N/A N/A N/A
12.0 o N/A N/A N/A

Applying the hotfix to SP3 did not change the ver to 12.5.1.500

i applied the hotfix to a xp and a 2003 box.  No change to the version number in the about area.  The liveupdate download does seem to change the version.

Does this Hotfix only apply to the Remote install of pcAnywhere

Hello, we have the Host install of pcAnywhere (12.5, build 442) for our users computers and when we run LiveUpdate no updates are being found.  When I run the "PCAnywhere_12.x_Tech179526" hotfix on these computers I receive the error (as stated in the bulletin) “This install is not valid for your version of pcAnywhere.”  I look at the awhlogon.dll showing 12.5.0.442.

The computers that we use to remote into these users computers have the Remote install and we were able to run LiveUpdate and the updates were installed and the awhlogon.dll are showing 12.5.1.500.  I am assuming the hotfix has been applied since the version on the computers with Remote install are at 12.5.1.500.

Does the hotfix pertain to the computers with the Host install?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will want to make sure you are up to 12.5 sp3 build 486 and

You will want to make sure you are up to 12.5 sp3 build 486 and then you can apply the latest patch that was released this week.

If any one is not up to at least 12.5.1 build 486 then the updates can be found here and they need to be applied in this order or use live update, but if live update isn't working as expected you can apply these individually.  So SOCDOR on your 442 installs run the following in this order.

12.5.463 (sp2)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH132060

12.5.846 (sp3)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH167734

Latest security hotfix.

At build 486 SP3 and can't install hotfix 179960

When I run the "PCAnywhere_12.x_Tech179960" hotfix on these computers I receive the error (as stated in the bulletin) “This install is not valid for your version of pcAnywhere.” I look at the awhlogon.dll showing 12.5.1.486.

Have tried everything as stated above, and can't get past that error message.  LiveUpdate tells me that everything is up to date.  This is very frustrating.

Do you have host only installs?

Do you have host only installs?   179960 won't apply to host only installs.   It has host and remote files that need to be updated and thus fails.    They released a new update friday that is supposed to accomidate both host only installs and host/remote installs.

At build 486 SP3 and can't install hotfix 179960

Thanks ICHCB.  Yes, it was host only installs that I was trying to apply the update.  Does SP3 update with only the host only install?  Could you let me know.  Thanks for you assistance.

hf1 and hf3 work find for host only istalls.

hf1 and hf3 work find for host only istalls.   hf2 was not needed if you had host only installs as it took care of the same files hf1 did and then additional remote files that host only installs don't have.

More info on host only instals is on this forum post.

After SP2, SP3, and HF3, our machines still show "12.5.0"

The About box of PCA shows "12.5.0", and either "Build 486" or "Build 442"

even after successfully manually applying SP2, SP3, and then the hotfix.  The DLLs & exes all have the right versioning now.  So where does this idiotic program pull info with which to populate the "About" box ????

I've got people demanding I prove the updates worked -- I can show them the dll versions, but they don't believe me; they believe the About box!  Arrgh.

The live update will increment the build number but not the msi

If you use the MSI it won't increment the build number  that is why under the verifying install the build number is not refered to but rather the individual files.  They did note that help and about can be used but they don't note the build number.

From my testing I can say that if LU was used for all the updated then the build number will be 12.5.1 build 515 with the latest hot fix installed.   To be sure confirm the file versions as noted in the table of the kb as proof to whom ever is asking you.

Verifying the update

To verify the update, check the file version of awhlogon.dll, awterm32.dll, awrem32.exe, crypto.dll, shellClient.dll, awcfgmgr.dll, WinAw32.exe, and PCAQuickConnectDLL.dll as follows:

  • On computers with 32-bit versions of Windows, these files will be in C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere.
  • On computers with a 64-bit version of Windows, these files will be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\pcAnywhere.
  • Your install path is different if a non-default location was used.
  • Use the following tables to figure out what version the file should be after the update.
