Performance Issues with OWA

EV8 SP2 and Exchange 2007 running in a virtual environment.
We are experiencing slow response through OWA (45 seconds +) and intermittent failures when retrieving archived emails. We haven't rolled EV out to users yet because of these problems, so there are only 2 users on the system. Through Outlook EV works fine.
Do you any advice for troubleshooting this issue ?

When a user logs into OWA and open their archived mail I would expect it to take 30 seconds to open - this is normal
However opening any additional archived email should be faster 7-15 seconds.
This is normal behaviour.

Users with access to a large number of vaults take usually longer than regular users through OWA for the first time.

Yes the users is an administrator, to be honest I could live with the delays if they were consistent but I wouldn't expect the intermittent failures (perhaps timeouts ?) when we only have two users using it. Again, any advice on troubleshooting these issues would be appreciated ?
