PGE WDE

Created: 25 Jul 2012 | 3 comments

I have a 9.10.0 PGE WDE that has locked up my Dell Inspirion.  I've used my same passphrase for three years.  It tells me it is not recognized?

How can I get it unlocked?  I only use this laptop occasionally - 4 or 5 times a year.  It contains a lot of data I don't want to lose or I would replace it.

Thanks,

I'm guessing that you did not update to Windows 7 on that machine, and hope this is correct since that version does not support Win7.  It sounds like you have some kind of corruption.  I'd suggest trying the WDE Recovery CD to attempt decryption.  It will likely take days to complete (depending on your machine's hardware) and must not be stopped for any reason once it is started; when it reports 0% still encrypted, it still has 1% to go, and will tell you when it is completely decrypted.  If you have the equipment to attach the hard disk to another machine with PGP installed, this decryption would be must faster.

Alternatively, if you have another machine with PGP WDE on you could put the HDD from the laptop in there to decrypt. Will go a lot quicker than using the recovery CD that only uses 16-bit, whereas another machine would be at least 32-bit.

Or use Windows PE on a USB stick to boot to, then decrypt from there.

Whatever works in your situation :)
