  • 1.  PGP Decryption failed, on a HDD with booting issue

    Posted Jul 25, 2012 05:54 AM

    Hi,

I My primary hard disk (PGP Encryped) did show some booting related .sys file error. I tried all options like safe mode, last known good configuration etc...but all lead to same blue screen. Later I tried, bootrec /fixmbr but after this, I lost even the F8 menu options. I just getting some ascii character on screen.

I got PGP Decryption CD and started decrypting yest. night. it took very long (was running fine as per pgpwde --status) , so I left it running. In morning it showed error:

Later, I restarted and got PGP passphrase enty screen. But after that, it says "operating system missing". Now, when I check pgpwde --status, it shows that

    "

Disk 0 is instrumented by bootguard.

Encryption (Decryption) process was interrupted improperly, possibly by BSOD or power failure.

    Current key is valid.

    Whole disk Encrypted.

Total sectors: 625139711 lowwaermark: 121480641 highwatermark: 625139649 reserved start sector: 62

Authentication needed to decode disk session key.

    Disk status completed.

    "

Now, if I try pgpwde --decryption... again, it executes fine.

Now, again, pgpwde --status... it takes a bit long and show below message

IOCTL_PGPWDE_SECTOR_READ failed: The specified network resource or device is no longer available. Disk 0 is not instrumented by bootguard.Disk Stauts completed.

But if I type "C:" and press <Enter>, it doesnot recognise the drive.

so, the same thing repeats if I restart the system.... I try to decrpt which runs fine, but status check shows the above error.

Please help, as I need to get my important data from the disk. I need to get data if I need to format it.

    Thanks a  lot!

    Daman

Might be a long shot, but is it possible to run a sector scan on the HDD? Maybe it's a hardware issue.

    Hi James,

How to run the HDD sector scan?

After a quick Google there are several bootable CDs available with utlities to run HDD diagnostics. The most notable being Hiren's boot CD and has utlities for almost anything, including antivirus scans outside of the OS. Look under Hard Disk Tools in the list on this page for the appropriate util: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

You could also try using a Windows installation CD/DVD to run a general chkdsk on the OS itself - should work if the data is actually decrypted, won't work otherwise.

    Hope that helps.
