PGP Desktop Home 10.2 MP3 encrypt and sign buttons broken in Outlook 2010
Hello,
We recently upgraded from PGP Desktop Home 9.9 to PGP Desktop Home 10.2 MP3. I installed it on a test machine to try it out (Windows XP running Office 2010, all updates). After installing, I went into tools, options, messaging in PGP and checked the "Enable PGP encrypt and sign buttons in Outlook" box. I then closed and reopened Outlook and created a new message.
There are "Sign" and "Encrypt" buttons in the top left in the new message window. If you type a message and click "Encrypt", the button lights up as if you are encrypting it but nothing happens. It will even let you send the message with this button lit. This makes users think an unencrypted message is being sent encrypted...
If you type out a message, select the window it is in, go down to the icon near the clock, right click, select "current window" and "encrypt", you are presented with a key selection dialog window. Here you select the recipient and the message is encrypted. You can then send it and unencrypt it on the other side. This proves the product is installed and working.
I'd like to know why my sign and encrypt buttons are broken in Outlook and how I can fix them.

In PGP Desktop, please go to the PGP messaging service, and make sure the Require Encryption policy is the only one above the three button policies, and that the three button policies are all set as active.

If my memory is correct, the Home license does not have support for the Exchange server. Although the home license description does not specifically state this, it does make references to use "without buttons and plugins."

But you can check if plugin is actually installed. In outlook, go to Tools, Trust center, Add-ins. You should see "PGP Outlook Plugin" and path to the file. Check if file exists and its size is not 0bytes
You can also check PGP logs when email go out without encrypting, PGP Desktop lock in traybar, View logs.

PGP Desktop Home 10.2 doesn't support Exchange. I'm assuming this is why the Outlook buttons are broken. We've given up and returned it. We are going to keep using 9.9 as that works with Exchange. The only reason we even wanted to upgrade is to resolve this totally separate issue, which occurs in 9.9 and in 10.2 MP3: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/outlook-2010-still-hangs-wpgp-1020
According to that post, MP4 is on the way. Maybe if you guys resolve that issue and don't create any new ones with MP4 we'll consider giving you money.
We've also had multiple issues with Altiris 7.1 and will probably drop that for Dell KACE solution in the future. After reading this we may want to get rid of Symantec Endpoint in the future as well: http://www.scmagazine.com/more-source-code-stolen-symantec/article/223787/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SCMagazineHome+%28SC+Magazine%29
You all need to get your act together!
10.2 supports exchange. All
10.2 supports exchange.
All our customers use this enviroment configuration, including Outlook and Encrypt button.
I would say this is some problem with Exchange policy. Perhaps exchange server is old and only works with old pgp software...
Regarding Symantec Endopint article, I can say that source code stolen in 2006 is in fact old, and most of it has been modified, since SEP was not desinged for Win7 in those years.

Julian,The Exchange version
Julian,
The Exchange version is 2007, it's not old. Your software has a giant message on the screen saying it doesn't support Exchange. I took a picture of it above. It's not an Exchange policy.
There are a lot of different versions of PGP. There is Desktop Home, Whole Disk Encrypt, Desktop Email, Netshare, Desktop Storage, Desktop Professional, and Desktop Corporate. One of your sales guys had to fax me a sheet explaining all this as you don't have this information on a website anywhere.
Maybe you can call sales and have them bring you up to speed...
In fact. Outlook is the one
In fact. Outlook is the one MAPI compatible, and the rest of the protocols.
PGP Just provides outlook plugin.

PGP Desktop , Corporate ,
PGP Desktop , Corporate , Whole disk, Home = Is the same pgp desktop package.
It only depends on the license, which features are enabled and which not....
When pgp package is fully enabled, this features can be used: PGP Zip, Messaging (email), Netshare, Whole disk and Virtual disk.
what happens if you use [PGP] subject in the email? does it encrypt?
Can you see the policy in the PGP Messaging tab?
If you want sales to provide support , go ahead...i Don´t think they can help you a lot.
If you are not satisfied with free-forum support, I suggest creating a new case to Symantec Support if your contract allows:

I spent hours and hours on
I spent hours and hours on this. I think the copy I bought comes with phone support but I think I'm always fiddling with it in off hours. Anyway it works for me now. This thread was helpful to try suggestions.
I am on Outlook 2007. Will see what happens when I go to Outlook 2010 in the near future. So I guess I'm not helping on the Outlook 2010 issue but it seemed very much like my original problem.
I had this experience:
1) a trial version, don't remember for sure if it was pgp desktop 9 or a 10.
The trial version I was able to get working satisfactorily after a few hours of playing about, in particular I somehow came up with this same advice "In PGP Desktop, please go to the PGP messaging service, and make sure the Require Encryption policy is the only one above the three button policies, and that the three button policies are all set as active."
2) after trial expired, I tried to buy 10.2. I downloaded and installed a pgp desktop 10.2 but I never got it to work right. I could only read encrypted emails by putting them in the PGP Desktop Viewer. I was never able to encrypt inline email that I sent. I was able to manually encrypt attachments only. I spent a bunch of time fiddling with the rules. I doublechecked about box and it said 10.1.x so I made a guess that either it installed wrong, or the wrong package was downloaded after purchasing. (I merely ddl'ed from provided link in purchase email ).
3) Today Jan 30 2012 I went back to purchase email and downloaded again from the same link. This time I got a different set of files. It says 10.2.0 MP3 in about box. I installed and ran and without making any other changes so far it appears to work satisfactorily. The encrypt button works. If I type [PGP] in the subject line it works. So at the moment I'm not discontent.
I found the online store at the time I purchased a couple of months ago to be quite awkward and it was really hard to figure out what features were in what version. Shouldn't I be able to go to the symantec site and find the needed product faster than using google to find it?
