  • 1.  PGP Desktop not encrypting messages when signed

    Posted Sep 07, 2011 01:41 PM

I've recently installed PGP Desktop 10.2 on a Win7 x64 machine with Office 2007. When I use the Encrypt button to send an encrypted message it seems to work fine. However, when I use both the Sign and Encrypt buttons, it signs the message but does not encrypt it. This behavior of encrypting without signing and signing without encrypting is exhibited whether I'm sending it to another PGP Desktop user or my Gmail account (which is included on my PGP key). The Security Policy for Sign + Encrypt buttons is set as it was installed, as shown below. Log data is shown below that. Any ideas on how to fix this are appreciated.

=====Begin PGP Log data (identification redacted)=====

13:36:36 Email     Info    Processing outgoing message from Xxxx Xxxxx <email sender> with subject: Sign + Encrypted email to verified recipient
13:36:36 Email     Info    Need passphrase for key 0x********; asking user
13:37:03 Email     Info    Received good passphrase from user

    =====End PGP Log data=====
13:37:03 Email     Info       Sending unencrypted PGP/MIME message to <email recipient>

    Thanks.

Security Policy didn't show up, so I've attached it.

Are your top policies in this order?:

    1) Require Encryption

    2) Sign + Encrypt Button

    3) Sign Button

    4) Encrypt Button

    No, they were set at

    1. Sign Button
    2. Require Encryption
    3. Sign + Encrypt Button
    4. Encrypt Button

Adjusting them as you suggested does seem to have fixed the problem. I took a look at the Policies Help File, and I think I understand now. Since the Sign Button was at the top, it was satisfied and disregarded the additional Encrypt Button. I must have reordered them accidentally while exploring the software.

    Thanks!

You are welcome - glad to hear this was the case -  it is what I was thinking.
