PGP Desktop problem drive decryption

Created: 08 Jul 2013 | 3 comments

had a problem where I was unable to log into the laptop with the pgp password.  inserted the recovery cd, it took the password ok, started to decrypt drive, but along the way it got an error:  'Encountered a bad sector while decrypting disk'  not sure if it is still decrypting or if it stopped at this error?

any info on this appreciated.

Once you start decryption of the disk with the WDE Recovery CD, it is very likely you will lose data if you stop it.  It is important that you not stop the decryption until you receive the message that decryption is complete.  If you are seeing or hearing disk activity, I would interpret this as the disk decryption continuing.  This can take several days to complete since it is only 16 bit processing.  If you should conclude that there is no disk activity and that therefore decryption stops, you may want to use SpinRite to correct the disk error - some time ago, their tech support told me that it would work even on encrypted disks, and I had no problem doing so.

Thanks for the quick Reply,  the operation did get a stop message eventually.  I will try the spinrite util and see if that helps any.
