PGP desktop simply stopped working

Created: 18 Dec 2012 | 2 comments

I have a PGP disk file that I use regularly.  Today when I clicked it to mount it, I got a dialog box saying "You wn't be able to do PGP Disk operations until you log off and you log back on again."  I logged off, then back on and got the same results.  I rebooted ... same results.

If I go to PGPDisk (the application) and try to launch it directly, I get the same result.

Help!  This data is important and I only have backups of the encrypted volume, not the data itself.

I have made no changes to anything.
The PGP version is 8.1.

Crikey that is an old version, but that's no excuse for it not working suddenly.  As that version was End of Support in August 2011, nothing would get tested against any recent patches on your OS.  Look through your installed updates, uninstall them if any were installed at the time you experienced the issue.

What OS are you running?  Is this a virtual disk?

PGP Destop 8 is 8 years old. It doesn't support any OS that Microsoft supports today. With the latest being Windows XP Sp1. See here:

Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (ME), Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a), Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP (Service Pack 1), or Windows Server 2003

This means that it will not operate correctly and cannot be supported on current version.

Are you able to access the backup of the encrpyted volume and open that? Or does that fail as well? If they both fail, I would look at upgrading (I would upgrade anyway). We are on PGP Desktop 10.2.1 MP5 for Windows now and they are coming out with Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3 soon.
