  • 1.  PGP Desktop v 10.1.2 Installation Issue

    Posted May 08, 2013 02:55 PM

I recently attempted to load PGP Desktop v 10.1.2 on to a PC running a 64 bit version of Windows 7, Home Premium. The installation did not go well. After loading the initial files, the setup program requested a system restart. Windows shut down normally, but would not restart. After an hour at the Starting Windows screen, a hard reboot was required to reload Windows. This made it necessary to restore the entire system to a previous state in which Windows are uncorrupted.

The installation file downloaded containted two setup files; one 32 bit and one 64 bit. I attempted to load the 64 bit file given that the operating system is the 64 bit version. Was this wrong? If not, can anyone offer any explination as to why the installation was unsuccessful? Should I perhaps use the 32 bit setup file despite the operating system being 64 bit?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For a 64 bit system, you need to use the 64 bit installer.  I would suggest looking at the PGP Release Notes for any known conflict or setting adjustment that may apply to your system.

Thank you for the suggestion, Tom. I reviewed the Release Notes and the User Guide for any preinstallation instructions. Although there area a great many comments in the Release Notes regarding various PGP features after the initial installation, there are none regarding the actual installation that may apply to the difficulity that I have encountered. Can you offer any further suggestons?

There have been a variety of improvements and bug fixes since your PGP version.  I'd suggest trying the current 10.3.x version.  You can try the trialware for this.  The trialware is fully functioning, with the only difference being that it comes with a time expiring trial period.  It may even accept your existing license.

    Tom, FYI.

I spoke with a technical support specialist at Symantec. She informed me that v 10.1.x is not compatable with the Windows 7 operating system. Only versions 10.2.x and up are compatable.

Based on your previous advise, I downloaded the trial version of 10.3.x. I am happy to say that the program loaded without issue. I am even happier to report that you were correct when you indicated that the license key for v 10.1.x might work with v 10.3.x. It did !!!!

My thanks to you for all of your help.

I'm happy to hear this is resolved for you.  However, just so that when others read this thread in the future, want to clarify that Windows 7 support was actually added with PGP 9.12. I can't explain why you were told otherwise.

Was the Windows 7 support added in v 9.1.2 for both the 32 and 64 bit versions?

As I mentioned previously, my system is 64 bits and 10.1.2 would not load. In fact, it corrupted the operating system to the point that a previous backup needed to be loaded.

BTW, I did use the 64 bit setup program included in the10.1.2 zip archieve instead of the 32 bit. I did not attempt to load v 9.8.3, which had been running on an XP machine. So I can not speak as to whether that would have loaded or not.

Windows 7 support was added with 9.12 (nine.twelve), not 9.1.2.  I believe that all Windows versions since 9.9 have included 64bit support, but of course not for Windows 7 until 9.12.  Your 9.8.3 would/should not have installed on Window 7.  The reason that 10.1.2 did not install on your system was because of some bug, or then unknown compatibility issue, that made it not compatible with something in your system.
