PGP Disk: File corrupted?

  • 1.  PGP Disk: File corrupted?

Hello.  I've had a PGP Disk file that I now try to mount, however when accessing the location I recieve "Location is not available: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."  I am able to enter the passphrase to "unlock" the PGP file, however I cannot access the contents.  Any thoughts?  Is there a way to repair the file?

It seems likely that the file has actually become corrupt.  However, it  might possibly help to hit the Options button before entering its passphrase and change the mount location.  If mounting to a folder, make sure that folder is completely empty.

I've tried that as well.  Even mounted to a drive letter.  The file can become corrupt even though I have to still enter a password?  Is there any way to repair the file?

It sounds like you are able to mount the virtual disk, but just not able to access the files it contains?  If that is the case, you might be able to do a disk scan of the virtual drive with any software that you would be able to use on a physical drive to identify and correct problems.  I can't really recommend any software for attempting this, but think the Norton Disk Doctor might be a possibility.

Hmm..  I will try that shortly.  I am currently working remotely (RDP) so it won't let me mount to a drive letter.  Curious, could this be a possibility that an END OF FILE line wasn't written to the file?  Can anything be edited in hex?  Just throwing thoughts out there.  I will try mounting to drive letter then running a disk utility to attempt a fix.

I know others have thought about this, but I'm not sure whether they actually attempted, and if so, whether there has been any success.

Do you know if there is a defined set of code that should be there?  The size of the file is accurate to the data that is stored in there.  It's obviously in some way, "still in there".  Just, can't get to it.

Sorry to say that I don't have anything to offer on that.

    WOAH!!!!!!!!   I GOT IT!

Ok.  Here's the scoop.  To recap, the symptom I encountered was when I mounted a PGP Disk after entering the passphrase, I attempt to open the location and get an error message that reads, "Location is not available: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."  Originally, I was mounting to a folder location.  So after a few panic attacks and getting ideas throughout this thread, I've now mounted the PGP disk to a virtual drive letter.  Now, I've done this previously and still got the same error message.  HOWEVER!!!!!!  Now what I've done is run data recovery software on this virtual disk.  (Not sure if I can mention the software as a reference)

    I RECOVERED EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom, thanks for bouncing ideas back and forth with me.   Now I'm going to create a new PGP disk and continue to back that one up!

Congratulations!  Glad you got this resolved.  If you mark the post best leading to the resolution of this as the Solution, it would be appreciated.  BTW, it is okay to mention the recovery software you used - it may be helpful to others if you do.

Ok.  Thank you very much for your quick responses and bouncing ideas back and forth that helped me come to this solution.

The data recovery software I used was Runtime Software's GetDataBack for NTFS.

Again, I mounted the PGP disk to a virtual drive INSTEAD of a folder.  And even though when accessing the drive I still recieved the error message "Location not available......", I ran the GetDataBack software recovery.  The mounted virtual drive will be listed as "LOGICIAL DRIVE".  Let the software scan and it will recover everything.  CHEERS ALL!   And thank you Tom.
