  • 1.  PGP - how to make it autologin different windows user account?

    Posted Aug 09, 2012 02:43 AM

Hello, I had to create another windows account for one user because the previous got somehow corrupted and does not load the profile. It worked, but PGP still autologins into the previous account. Is there a way to set the new pgp user as "default" or something? Now I have there two pgp users in PGP desktop. Shall I delete the old one?

    Thanks

You're better off deleting the older PGP account and use SSO with the new account, it will be much less hassle in the long term.

You may have not understood my question :) I need to know how to do it without breaking it so if you were more specific it would help ;D So you say I just delete the old user in PGP desktop and single sign on will then automatically work with the new one?

As I understand it from what you've said:

    • You have a new user created (old one deleted)
    • PGP is still trying to sign into deleted user - this will mean its key is for the deleted user, and the domain credentials are for the deleted user
    • You want SSO to work again

If all those assumptions are correct, backup the key, create a new PGP user to reflect the new Windows user, and import the old key into the new PGP user.

After that everything will work, including SSO

Hello, I did not say I deleted the old user account. It is still present. But in the new one there is no PGP desktop being run after login, so I don't know how to import the keys...

When I try to run PGP desktop it says

Do you think copying of c:\documents and settings\oldusername\application data\PGP corporation\PGP to the new profile would help?

Yes you need to do that, but you also need to modify the registry.

    Export HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/PGP Corporation/

and import that into the new user, then go into Export

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/PGP Corporation/PGP and change UserPath key to reflect the new username

    That should be sufficient.

This is already there in the new user's registry and it is the same like in the old one, except the path of course. There is also pgptray.exe in start menu / all programs / startup, but this shortcut does nothing. Running the all programs / PGP corporation / PGP desktop does something but makes the error I posted above though... Not sure what is the difference between the shortcuts because they are defined in registry and you cannot see anything from their properties.

I wonder why this seamingly easy problem cannot be fixed by some standard way instead of this crazy hacking :-\

If you have no more ideas how to get past this error, then I guess the best way will be to boot from our recovery media with pgpwde, decrypt the drive from there, uninstall PGP and reinstall. Thanks for now

I only know of changing the registry to do this unfortunately.
