  • 1.  PGP Key on External Hard Drive Not Working

    Posted Nov 22, 2011 01:36 PM

    Hello,

I have an external hard drive that I keep all of my backups on.  When I first got the hard drive, I encryped it;s contents using PGP.  I recently had the laptop reimaged with Windows 7;  unfortunately since that migration, I'm unable to access my external hard drive.  The passphrase on my laptop matches the one that is supposed to be on my external drive.  I access the external drive all the time, so I know I have not forgotten the passphrase.  As my external hard drive contains all of the data that was on my laptop prior to migration, I am at a loss as it will no longer recognize my passphrase.  Is there a way to resolve the accesss issue on the external hard drive?  Is it possible it was tied to my old machine?  Any help is greatly appreciated as it contained 4 years worth or work!

    Thank you.

Did you encrypt the external drive to a passphrase, or to a public key?  If it was to a public key, you must have the paired private key, along with the private key's passphrase.

I used a pass phrase to encrypt the external drive.  The other issue might be that the encryption process was not completed.  If you can help in any way, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

Please quote the exact error message you receive when you use the passphrase to access the external drive.  I hate to say it, but when others have reported this problem in the past, it was not unlikely that they had actually encrypted it to their public key for which they no longer had the necessary private key needed for the decryption.
