I download a encrypted file that I have been for months and I get the following message from PGP Desktop 10.2.  "2 unknown keys"

I tried to re-import my keys and keyrings and it will not allow me to import my keyrings.  I created this key and sent it out months ago, and now it will not work.  Very frustrating.  Please help.

You are correct that this error message means that the file is not encrypted to a public key for which you have the necessary private key for its decryption.  If you actually have the private key on your keyring, the problem may be that you do not have Trust set as Implicit.

How are you attempting to import your keyrings?  What actually happens when you attempt to import them?

In PGP Desktop I do File / Import and then I import my TEXT File 1st.  The trust will not allow me to set to IMPICIT.  Then I do File / Import and then I import my 2 keyrings that are associated.  The one titled "pubring" imports  fine, When I try and get the other kering titled "secring" it says, "PGP is unable to import any keys, certificates, or groups from selected file".

Let me know if you need more info.  Thanks.

The keys you have imported are public keys only, so you are not able to decrypt with them, and are also not able to set them as having Implicit Trust.  The message error you are receiving when trying to import keys from your private keyring suggests that you do not have any private keys on this copy of the keyring.  Did you maybe obtain the incorrect copy of the private keyring?  Sometimes this will happen when the location of the keyring has been changed from the default (which can cause the creation of an empty keyring).

The issue is that I created this keyring and sent it to another to send me encrypted files.  It created 2 files fro me.  Everything was working untill I got in this morning.  Not sure why it would just stop working.  Where can I find the settings in PGP Desktop to see where default keyrings are set to be located?

In PGP Desktop, right click on All Keys, and select Properties.

Tom, thanks, I imported an older backup keyring and now it works.  Not sure why it stopped working, but glad it does now.  Thank you.
