  • 1.  PGP keys missing?! Cannot decrypt.

    Posted Mar 23, 2012 03:56 PM

    Greetings,

I was using an old version PGP Desktop Home 10 for Mac. It crashed when trying to launch, so I downloaded and installed PGP Desktop Corporate (There does not seem to be a Home edition anymore).

I launched the PGP app, but no keys showed in the window. I looked in the PGP keyring folder in Documents and there are newly created keyrings and the previous ones are not there. What the heck happened? I can't beleive the product would overwrite PGP keyrings.

When I double-click my archive in the FInder and enter my passphrase, it accepts the passphrase, but then I get an error: "Error The file could not be Decrypted/Verified."

Also, I looked at a backup of the drive, and the ketrings there are 0k.

What is going on? Where are the private keys for PGP Desktop Home 10 for Mac stored?

    Please help.

Okay. Yeah. So consider the question of where the keys are stored removed from my post and now read as:

Sorry about that - I was so happy to be able to find the Mac location of keyrings for you!

PGP installation does not result in keyrings from a prior installation being removed.  It appears that either they were not in the default location or your crash created the problem.

There still is the Home license:

    http://www.symantec.com/desktop-home

I purposely stated "license" instead of "product" because the same installation software is used for what ever PGP Desktop license is being used - it is the license that determines what components are activated for use.

    Take a look at:

    /Applications/PGP.app/

YOu can also do a search on the whole drive for .pkr files (at least that is the extension in windows)

It not probable that PGP desktop erased your keyring. When you uninstall / reinstall, you are prompted if you want to save your actual keyring or not....do you remember if you saw this message?
