  • 1.  PGP not able to decrypt (or very very slow?)

    Hi all,

I am using Lenovo T410.My whole disk encrypted with PGP.My laptop felt down after that everything hanged .Then I shut down and restart after that I got blue screen.

I used PGP Recovery Disk and one screen came with "Press any key to continue". I pressed enter button after that I pressed 'D' to decrypt hard disk.I got screen Decrypting boot disk, please wait. From last 6 days its showing 99% remains encrypted: please wait for completion.

The hard disk led is always on, so I suppose is always reading and writing, but if I put my ear very close to the hard disk it is silent 4-5 seconds and then I hear the movements of hd heads for a little while and silent again 4-5 seconds (so I don't know if is decrypting very slow or if is stopped)

I have very important data on my laptop and I don't have data back-up.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

               Jorge

PD: Sorry for the upside-down screenshot (on my PC is showing ok but on the forum it is shown upside-down)

Please be patient; it is probably still decrypting.  If you stop the WDE Recovery CD decryption, it is likely to never be recoverable.  The WDE Recovery CD is slow 16 bit processing that can take a very long time, depending on your hardware and disk size.  On this high end desktop computer with a 700 GB hard disk, it takes a good 5 days.  I'm quessing your machine needs a longer time.  Sometimes, the displayed %age of decryption fails to change despite the decryption properly taking place.  When it is complete, there will be statement displayed saying it is complete.

please do update this forum thread if Tom Mc's post resolves your issue. I would concur with him that the recovery CD takes a while to decrypt. It will probably take at least a few days.Just be sure that it comes back stating that the decryption is finished before you shut down or reboot (if it's at 0% it's actually still finishing up).

    Thanks Tom MC and PGP_Ben!

I'm still waiting .. and this is the 9th day ....  (I don't know if such a long time is normal or not)

Anyway I'll update this post when the process has finished .... or when I give up ....

    Thanks

    Did the decryption complete?

No, after 10 days the screen was still showing the same messages and I had to stop it ;-(

Sorry to hear that, but thanks for letting us know.

You could try taking the hard drive out and putting it in another machine which has PGP Desktop installed on it. Provided the disk drive is still recognizeable after the hard drive sounds like it took a hit and it was shut down during the decryption process.

I am not given the option to decrypt my Mac SSD.

I need to decrypt it to uninstall PGP because PGP is preventing my new MacBook Air from hibernating properly when closed overnight, causing the laptop to die each night. I am told this is a known issue with PGP and Mac SSDs, but I can't seem to uninstall PGP now without decrypting the disk.

shouldn't it be right there in the corner?Screen Shot 2013-10-11 at 2.41.10 PM_0.png

Thankfully I had time machine backups so I just wiped my SSD and restored from before I installed PGP.

Wish I had know PGP doesn't work with MacBook SSD's before I wasted my time!
