  • 1.  PGP SDA - Number of extracted objects does not match footer

    Posted May 29, 2014 03:20 PM

We recieve PGP SDA's from our clients on a regular basis.  Usually these SDA's are extracted on 32bit Windows XP without issue.  With support for XP coming to an end, we are moving XP out of our environment.

We have found that a set of PGP SDA's received from the client will extract without issue on Windows XP, but fail to extract on the following Operating Systems:

    • Windows 7 32Bit  <-- we did this just to make sure it wasn't a 32/64bit thing.
    • Windows 8 64bit
    • Windows Server 2012 64bit  (Our new 1U machines)

The PDP SDA opens, accepts a password, and then begins to extracting.   At the very end we receive the error message: "Number of extracted objects does not match footer"

Has someone seen this error before and can they explain the issue?

    Thanks

Also, we received a collection of them.   Only some of these are affected.

    Thanks

Seems a bit random, need to remove some of the randomness first.

    Do you have PGP Desktop?

What version of PGP Desktop is your client using?

Do they use the same machine to encrypt?  What is that OS?

    Thanks for your reply.

We generally do not have PGP Desktop installed, though we downloaded the evaluation to troubleshoot, but found that the application would not open the SDA's only zips.   We receive the SDA's from different clients and open them directly and extract without PGP Desktop.   We've received them for years and never used PGP Desktop.

Unfortunately, I don't have the answers for the other questions at the moment, though we will be looking to get those details. For the type of industry we are in, collections could be done by different contractors and at vastly different times for a client.  This can make getting that information rather difficult and time consuming and nearly impossible if it's not a blocker type of situation. It looks like we are looking at keeping a 32bit XP VM around for this case.  Some of our research shows that SDA's made by older versions of PGP Desktop can have issues on newer OS's which is sort of crazy.

    Hi PhantomEight,

I never tested this, but have you attempted to run them in the Compatibility mode?
