    Hi IMe,

Just by installating a Standalone Symantec Encryption Desktop client without typing any license during the installation you will get a limited access to the product having only available PGP Viewer, PGP ZIP and PGP Shredder. So you don't need the license.

    Hi IMe,

I am not aware that there is have an offer/license for that single feature.

Technically you can get that feature in a trialware.
Legally you need to review the EULA terms and conditions.

    http://www.symantec.com/products-solutions/trialware/
"Download trialware to evaluate full versions of our products for a limited time. At the end of the trialware process, you'll be prompted to purchase a license to continue your use of the product."

For more details please consult the Product License Agreements and Third Party Notices.

There are plenty of good free Shredding softwares out there, if you don't need any of the "real" features of PGP (aka the actual encryption products) then have a quick google.

thanks all for your feedback on this. dcats, i cant see in the EULA a definitive mention of use of the functionality that is left over after the full trialware period expires. i would assume functionality that is not deactived like the main features would be ok to use - otherwise, why wouldnt they be deactivated too ?

Alex_CST - any suggestions on other reputable free shredders is welcome ? As you mention, there are plenty out there - but knowing which one is a genuine shredder and which may have shredder functionality and also some malicious intent is the challenge. It is after all confidential documents we are looking to securely dispose of , so i dont want to shoot myself in the foot by using a tool that may in fact compromise the documents being destroyedsmiley

One called literally File Shredder, which can also shred free disk space.

When installing Symantec Encryption Desktop, after a reboot it will prompt you for a license.  At this point there is an option to operate in an unlicensed mode and lose most of the functionality.  The remaining functions will only include Viewer, Zip, and Shredder.

So, if you choose to continue with using Symantec Encryption Desktop, those functions are available without a license.
