  • 1.  Is PGP supported on the Microsoft Surface devices?

    Posted Feb 18, 2013 03:12 PM

I've done a lot of testing with PGP on Windows 8 without any issue thus far.  Is PGP encryption supported on the Microsoft Surface Pro at this point?  Will a PGP encryption product be released for Windows 8's application store?

    Thanks,

    Derek Tonkin

Are you asking about the RT version of the Surface or the Pro version?  I would assume that if Windows 8 was supported by PGP than on the Pro version it would just work?

There would probably have to be a specific version of PGP for ARM for the the RT version of Sruface.

I would love to see a PGP/Symantec Encryption RT/Metro Windows 8 app but my primary concern was whether the Surface Pro was supported.  From what I can gather it looks like Symantec is not supporting PGP encryption on any UEFI devices and since the Surface Pro is using UEFI I'm assuming that it would not encrypt successfully.

Symantec Corporation does not have Windows 8 support for PGP/Symantec Encryption Desktop products yet. This may come later this year. Please subscribe to:

    To stay informed on this.

Note: Touchscreen tablet support at the preboot screen won't be available for some time (on Windows 8 or not) with regard to Drive Encryption. This is due to a requirement of drivers to use this. So that is another limiting factor that I see currently to use the Surface Pro tablet with PGP.

Note: You could still use an USB keyboard or the surface pro docking station (with the keyboard) as a workaround.

moving forum thread to corrupt product discussion group since this is a PGP/Symantec Drive Encryption issue i'm moving over to the PGP product section.

We now support Windows 8 email encryption for 32-bit Outlook 2013 on Windows 8. Drive Encryption support will be available later this year, with the caveat I noted prior about not having virtual keyboard support yet. I can confirm with testing that Microsoft Surface Pro tablet and the additional dock that you can buy which offers an keyboard interface on the tablet. Does seem to be working with our beta release builds, etc though. So it's looking promising. Stay tuned.

It is supported now on Surface pro-get 10.3.1.

10.3.1 does not have a metro app or support for Surface RT

It does work on the Surface Pro now. You do need to hold the volume down rocker when powering it on to activate the keyboards though. I also had to disable Secure Boot for the Boot Guard to come up as well.

Other than those two things, it seems fine on the device so far.
