  • 1.  PGP unable to decrypt after installing win7

    Posted Jun 20, 2011 11:31 AM

I install PGP Desktop in my Win XP, and I have encrypt my whole hard disk. After I Install win7 in my volume E (My win Xp is in volume c). I can't find the PGP Desktop interface to input my password when I turn on my computer. So I decided to decrypt my hard disk with the PGP WINPE. when I input the command    pgpwde --disk 0 --decrypt -p "password" . It can't be decrypted, it said " Disk 0 is not instrumented" .  And when i input the command pgpwde --disk 0 --status . It said "Disk 0 is not instrumented by bootguard".

How can I turn on the instrunment by bootguard? Thank you!

You might want to try the WDE Recovery CD.  As you have discovered, partitions and operating systems should NOT be modified on an encrypted disk.

I have try the WDE Recovdery cd, it can decrypt, but it take me five hours only decrypted 5% of my disk., that means I Need almost 100 hours to decrypted my disk. But my friend said I can use the PGP WINPE decrypt it in 4 or 5hours. when i use the WIN PE , it can not decrypt by show the wrong messages I said befor. So do I have other way to decrypt my disk quickly. Can i use the Win PE way and what command do I need to type. Or will this process become a little quickly later? I can not afford the 100 hours

Yes, the extra decryption time of the 16 bit Recovery CD use is a major factor to consider.  Although you have likely seen it, I'll mention this Article just in case you haven't.  Personally, I have no experience with Win PE.

I have finished the decryption by the Recovery CD. But it only decrypt my driver D and F, My driver C and E are still encrypted. My driver C is the driver which has installed my win xp, and i hava an important file there,  why i couldn't decrypt my driver c. Only decrypted my driver d and f means not thing to me. Tom, could you please tell me how can I decrypt my driver c ?  Thank you!

Your not being able to decrypt two of your drives is the result of partitioning and/or installing a new operating system while having your disk encrypted.  This must never be done without decrypting the disk first.  The two options I would suggest trying (but am not real optimistic about):

    1) Attaching the disk to another computer (internally, or via an external disk casing with USB) and using the second computers PGP installation to attempt decryption.

    2) If your installation of Windows 7 is working, install PGP there and then use this install to attempt decryption.
