  • 1.  PGP WDE does not recognize 3TB partition

    Posted Mar 25, 2011 06:17 PM

Windows 7 Pro 64bit running PGP Desktop 10.0.3

Attached is Seagate 3TB drive -- OS can see it just fine, read-write fine.

PGP doesn't recognize the drive at all.

According to the user guide, there is no max on the capacity of the drive if it is a simple NTFS partition.

Is there a trick to this?

    Thanks!

I'm guessing that you may have a 4k sector size for the drive.  I've seen bug reports (that I can check Monday when I'm on my Symantec computer): if I recall correctly, indicate such a problem.

I just checked the bug reports, and my memory is correct - WDE requires the standard sector size of 512 bytes.  I'm still guessing that your sector size is 4k. This Microsoft article may be helpful.

I've applied the Microsoft hotfixes above and and some Intel tools and for storage diagnostics.

Just a quick question -- if you connect a 3TB USB drive, see it in PGP WDE?

It is not clear to me how to go about making this adjustment. I played around with different settings but am not making progress.

I am just throwing darts at it.

Can you confirm that you can see a 3TB drive in your build?

    Thanks.

I can't find anything explicitly stating that 3TB disks have been demonstrated as working with WDE; but rather that 3TB disks not working have been confirmed as not working because of not having the default sector size.  I'm not personally familar with the following from Symantec PGP Support, but it may be helpful to you:

To find out what the sector size of the

disk is, run diskprobe, then click on Drives, Physical Drives, and double-click

on PhysicalDrive1, 2 3 etc.,  then click "Set Active" Click OK.

Next, click on Drives again, then click Volume Information.  This will tell us

the sector size of the disk.

Once you're done, click on Drives again, then click "Close Handle".  Obviously,

you don't want to modify anything with this and run it as Read Only.
