PGP Whole Disk Encryption Installion Failure

Trying to install 10.2.1 MP5 on two laptops.  On both, I get the normal first screen where I can choose the language and click "OK", then immediately a Windows Installer window opens up with a bunch of command line switches for the installer.
Here is a pic of the dialog box.

These are both brand new laptops right out of the box - Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
I have the installer I have used on previous PCs and it works with no problem.
I have downloaded a fresh installer direct from Symantec server - Install fails.
I have tried to install the older v. 10.2.1 MP3 - Install fails
Turned off UAC - Install fails
Uninstalled all of the HP Security software - Install fails
Installed all Windows updates - Install fails

I have installed Acrobat X Pro and a couple other apps with no problems.  Only the PGP installer.

    Anyone see this before?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Might be a silly question, but are you using the 64bit installer for WDE? It sounds like the setup isn't running msiexec properly, but it's a bit strange if it works on other machines ok. If you're using the correct installer, maybe make sure Windows is up to date in case there are any msiexec updates included and then try WDE again.

I tried both the 32bit and 64bit versions on both laptops. Both are fully patched. I even did a system restore on one to the point right after I setup the laptop and i still get that Windows Installer box. Come to think of it, I havent looked at system logs yet, which is normally the first thing I check out. If thats a bust, I am planning on restoring one to factory and see what happens. Perplexed....

Try to post a log from msi installation (including msi installation pattern you use ) for example:

    “msiexec /i pgpdesktop.msi PGP_INSTALL_DISABLESSOENROLL=0
    /quiet /l*vx C:\users\pgp.log

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300

I have copied your command line exactly - except changed it to pgpdesktop.exe - and I get the error “msiexec /i pgpdesktop.exe PGP_INSTALL_DISABLESSOENROLL=0 /quiet /l*vx C:\users\pgp.log is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I am not intentionally trying to be fancy with the installer.  In the past all I have done is double click it to run it, choose OK on the next window and then follow the prompts to get it installed.  Not sure why the installer is acting this way on these two laptops.

Could it be because it is not an .MSI file?  It has always worked perfectly before using this .EXE installer.  Is there and MSI install file I should be using instead?

msiexec can't be used to install an *.exe but only MSI and MSP packages ( http://www.advancedinstaller.com/user-guide/msiexec.html ) so if you have got a pgpdesktop.exe installation file and it is a managed client than the extension will be *.msi and then you can only use msiexec command.

Managed client installation will have *.msi file extenstion ( you can extract from MSI file an *.exe file anyway)
Standalone client installation will have *.exe file extension.

So as you stated that you have downloaded a fresh installer from the server I thought you use a *.msi file.

Please run above command using the switch which you need with *.msi file as per below KB:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO84112  and post the logs

Sorry.  I misspoke when I said downloaded from Symantec server ... that should have been Symantec website - our licensing portal.

These are all unmanaged clients and have all (40+ clients so far) been installed previously with the standalone .EXE installer.

So I guess the question is, if the Windows Installer is not meant for the .EXE installer, then why does it open during the install?

At this point, I think I am going to revert one of these laptops to factory fresh and see what happens.  Maybe there was a weird thing when these were imaged originally.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

    Chris

I have just run a *.exe installer in two ways:

    a) C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop>SymantecEncryptionDesktopWin32-1
    0.3.1.exe /?

    and

    b) C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop>SymantecEncryptionDesktopWin32-1
    0.3.1.exe

In example a) the window Installer pop up just appear after the firs screen but wen I run b) it did not appear at all. It might the case that accidently while running *.exe file you tried to add some additional switches which are not accepted hence the windows installer pop up as an information afterwards.

As you said try again a fresh install on a factory fresh laptop and post a feedback or simply run the same test agin like me.

I will check that out.  I am not - nor ever have - tried to run the installer with any switches.  Just double click and go.  I am just finishing a factory reset on one of the laptops and will give it another shot.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

    Status Update

Factory restore fixed whatever the problem was. Install now runs normally.
    Appreciate all the responses.
