  • 1.  PGP Whole disk encryption issue.

    I purchased and installed PGP for whole disk encryption, cjoose a passphrase and proceeded with the encryption process. A power outage disconected my Toshiba laptop. When I tried to start it again a symnentec PGP grey screen appears asking for a passphrase, I write it, Windows starts and then Windows tells me that its password is wrong. I restart the laptop and I enter into this continuous loop.
    In the PGPscreen I can read that only 52 % of the disk is encrypted.

    Please let me know how do I get rid of PGP or how do I fix the problem ?,
    Can I reset it to start again ?
    Is there a way to bypass the PGP screen and enter into Windows and reset the password there?
    Its a windows 7 operating system.

    I'd suggest trying the PGP WDE Recovery CD for decryption.  Be aware that this is slow 16 bit processing, can take days to complete, and must not be stopped before completion.  When it reports 0% left encrypted, it actually has 1% left - it will tell you when decryption is complete. It can take a few days to complete, depending on your hardware.

    Hello My recovery had to shut dowm midway 52pc remaining due to power failure. can i continue ? wat are next steps

    Although it is considered critical that the WDE Recovery CD decryption must not stop for any reason, including power failure, I have seen it reported by at least one person who then restarted the WDE Recovery CD decryption that successfully completed the decryption.  So, it is definitely a possibility of success, and there isn't really any other recommended approach at this point.  I would start it again.

    Hello Tom,

     

    I have a quick question trying to encrypt the entire disk using the PGP Desktop professional 10.2.1. and the process is frozen on 90% since last 6 days. Will it take time to encrypt the drive ??

    This sounds like an excessive time for the encryption, but then I don't know how much time may be involved with the computer not working on the encryption, such as when it is shut down, sleeping, etc.  I'd suggest using the command line usage in this Knowledge Base Article to assess whether encryption is progression over time.
