Planning a server migration

jwinters@crowriverbank.com's picture

We are running Back up exec server edition 12 on a Win Server2003 R2  on a very old  server.

I am planning a server upgrade and have a few questions.

I purchased one good new server (Dell R710).   Is there any compatibility issues that I should be aware of?

Will Back up Exec 12 run on Server 2008 64 bit or would Server2008 R1 or Server 2003 R2 be better?

Will Microsoft Hyper V on Server 2008 R2 cause issues?

Do you have a migration plan for me to follow?

I run Symantec 11.0.4 End Point Protection on server and desktops.  Any issues with this program?

Any program compatibility issues I need to be aware of?

Worried!

I currently run Backup Exec 12.5 on Windows 2008 64bit Enterprise w/out any problems. 2008 R2 is *not* supported with 12.5 as a Media server (and somewhat works as a remote agent), wait for 2010. Actually you could start testing it out using the Backup Exec 2010 beta before hand (open to the public w/155 day trial).

First off, you will need to purchase the Agent for "Microsoft Virtual Server" or what will be called Hyper-V agent if you want backup the whole VM. If you have enough server agents you could use those instead of buying the Microsoft Agent. On a side note, once again Backup Exec 12.5 doesn't support VM's using clustered shared volumes (which is used in a HA configuration using fallover clustering in 2008 R2).

In terms of migrating to a new server I haven't tried it, but they have a option called "Copy Server Configuration" if you look in licensing. It might just be you'll have to just recreate all of the jobs if you don't have a central server running. I'd be curious what others say about migrating between different servers in a single server configuration. Just make sure when you do upgrade make sure to upgrade the remote agents as well.

Not sure about your other questions, I don't see any reason why a Dell R710 wouldn't run Backup Exec. I've found it can basically be installed on any computer as you long you meet the software and hardware requirements.
