Remediation instructions if Symantec Mail Security for Domino is installed:
If the technician has to resolve broken definitions with SAV/SEP in a Domino environment and does not want to corrupt SMSDOM 5.x or 7.x, there are critical configurations of the Domino environment the technician must find out:
How many Domino servers are involved?
Do all the Domino server have SAV/SEP installed?
Do the Domino servers replicate definitions?
The above data will tell the technician about how the replication of virus definitions is configured for the Domino environment.
There are 2 examples below and the following items (A) and (B) are assumed:
Multiple Domino Servers
All have SAV installed
Example 1:
In the below example, “ONLY” SAV / SEP to updating the virus definitions.
With the above information, the Technician would perform the following steps to ensure SMSDOM is not corrupted:
Have the customer open the file SAV.NSF on the “HUB” server within the Domino Administrator.
Once the file "SAV.NSF" is open:
Open the associated server group.
Click the Liveupdate Tab
Uncheck Enable LiveUpdate
Uncheck Save Downloaded virus definitions in the SMSDOM Definitions database.
Click Save
(The above ensures that SMSDOM will no longer attempt definition downloads within SMSDOM and will alleviate possible virus definition corruption.)
Have customer open the Domino server Console and type the following command:
tell sav quit
Navigate to the Notes\data\sav folder and delete the SAVDEFS.NSF database
This will ensure that when SMSDOM is brought back up that it will not use the corrupted virus definitions within the SAVDEFS.NSF database.
Perform Symantec Endpoint Protection definition remediation steps outlined above.
Once remediation is complete and SAV / SEP has an updated virus definition, have the customer type the following command in the Domino server Console:
Load nntask
In the above example steps, SMSDOM will look into the usage.dat file and update the definitions accordingly.
As SAV / SEP updates virus definitions and the usage.dat file, SMSDOM will update correctly.
Example 2:
In this example, SAV is corrupted on a HUB, while other servers rely on this HUB server to receive definitions.
Multiple Domino servers running SMSDOM.
One (1) System with Internet / SAV or SEP installed.
Fix the virus definitions with SAV/SEP on the Domino server per KB 2007123111551948.
The following steps are the only difference from example 1:
Have the customer open the file "SAV.NSF" on the “HUB” server within the Domino Administrator.
Once the file "SAV.NSF" is open:
Have the option Save downloaded virus definitions checked/selected. [Ensure that this is the HUB server for the savdefs.nsf database.]
This creates a definition database that will need to be replicated to the other Domino servers that do not have SAV / SEP or Internet.
The definitions with SAV/SEP will update the SMSDOM server, in turn will update the definition database then Domino replicates to the other Domino Servers.
