    Hi,

Is it at all possible to buy and install a SEP client only without SEP Manager and the dedicated database?

Our external IT consultant urged our NGO to install only a SEP 11Client on our server - without firewall, mailscanning etc, which we have already in other ways, and because he feares that it will affect the functionality of server.

    IT assistant, Salih

Yes, it's possible to install SEP clients in your environment without SEPM (Manager). Install the clients in the unmagaed mode from the CD, option is available in the first screen.

However, this will be effective only if you have very less number of clients. (Less than 5 or less than 10). As each client will download it's own virus defination and may give additional burdon on your Internet bandwidth.

Please note that you can convert Unmanaged client to Managed client, anytime in the future, without re-installing.

    Hi,
you can't buy only the Endpoint client without the Manager... you pay for it anyway.

In general the Manager installation affects only the server's performance, like any application it uses RAM, CPU and HDD... the most common issue with the Manager installation is a port conflict. The filling of the hard disk out was already resolved and no other serious issues were documented yet.
So, does your server meet the system requirements for the Manager?

The Manager is a big and complex product: if you install and forget it then it is not dangerous but at least useless and resources eating. If you have 5-10 computers then you likely don't need the Manager and you can use the unmanaged Endpoint in all your machines.
So, do you really need the Manager?

If you have a big company you need a Manager to manage the clients from one only place and centralyze the LiveUpdate contents distribuition.
You can install the Manager in another server and then, in the critical server you can install the managed Endpoint that is identical to (sometimes even better than and for sure not worse than) the unmanaged one but it downloads the contents and the settings from and sends the logs to the Manager via a web server installed in the management server. That's what managed means.

    Cheers,

The only overhead of the manager is on the server(s) it's installed on.
IT's part of the bundle, and I highly doubt you can save money by cutting it out - I don't believe it's even listed that way. IT's a package deal.
HOWEVER, you can install as much or as little as you want.
At home I run it in unmanaged mode on all my computers.
And as the others have said, if you have more than a small handful of computers, using the management piece is much more effecient. I run it on 2 VM servers - that way the memory and processors can be adjusted as needed at the drop of a hat. And for us, I discovered I needed to add processors and run 3 gig RAM minimum. But we're strange that way - our network takes some heavy management even for the small size of only 370 clients. Partly because we are in 45 offices around this state, partly because our users can't or don't or won't understand safe computing and have decided "it is there, therefore I must click it".
I'll say one thing - TGFSEM/SEP (as opposed to TGIF for example)
Now, SEM has nothing to do with installing firewall, etc. on servers. SEM is the management, SEP is what consists of AV, firewall and so on.

I'm here to say now - I've got the FULL  package installed on our servers. I did NOT do that with earlier releases, but with the vERY VERY LATEST, it's running on domain controllers, file and print servers, etc. and NO issues! (at least none that didn't exist BEFORE sep)

It's not interfered with anything, AND you can create an install package for servers that is only AV, and one for other clients that is the full package.

It's VERY tune-able, meaning you can make it all or as little as you want.

IMO, install all of it on all servers, the management on 1 or 2 as you need, and tune and adjust as needed. You can install it all on a server, and if for exmaple the firewall causes issues, go to add/remove programs and modify then choose to remove the firewall. It's that simple.
