Post SP3 error a0008486, a00084f8
Updated: 23 May 2010 | 8 comments
Since upgrading to SP3 of 9.1 Rev 4691, we've been getting errors on our Small Business Server 2003 Premium backups.
Shadow Copy Components and all SBS SQL components (sharepoint, monitoring, etc) fail with a0008486,
Exchange information store fails with a00084f8.
Only the native drives and Exchange public folders are backed up successfully.
- I am unable to find a0008486 in the KB
- This is a SBS 2003 site, with all agents on the same box, so I'm assuming it's not a networking issue.
Please advise.

Hello Andrew,
- Can you please telll us the exact error message including the error text?
- Also are you backing up Exchnage together with system state? If yes we advice you to split the backup and try.
- Any errors in the event logs?

Hi Amruta
On the Shadow Copy Components, the error is:
Error : a0008486 - The media operation was terminated by the user.
On the Exchange Information Store First Storage Group, the error is:
Error: a00084f8 - The network connection to the Backup Exec Remote Agent has been lost. Please check for network errors.
Would you like me to post/email the actual report to you?
Yes, all components are being backed up in a single job - I will try to split out the Exchange and system state components and try again.
Question: Can these problems somehow be a symptom of a full tape? The tape drive is DDS4 (20Gb/40Gb) and I see that these problems started once the backup set exceeded 26-27Gb, which may be the effective capacity given the real compression ratio. I have only tried it once, yesterday, but a backup to disk ran to completion without errors and a size of 29.4Gb.
Hello,
Was the upgrade successful and did you upgrade all the remote agents after the Sp3 install.

Yes, as far as I can tell the upgrade was sucessful. As for the remote agents - this is a single server Small Business Server 2003 site, there are no real "remote" agents involved.
Hello,
- Is this a local backup?
- Please check for the following settings.
Title:
"A timeout occurred waiting for data from the agent during operation shutdown" or "The network connection to the Backup Exec Remote Agent has been lost. Check for network errors" (a00084f8 HEX or e00084f8 HEX) is reported during a backup operation.

Reasons why the data throughput rate can be slower than the theoretical maximum when backing up to tape media

The docs don't seem to relevant to the problem. However, we have established that by substantially reducing the amount of data to be backed up (by excluding certain large directories containing semi-static data on the normal data volumes) that the backup proceeds to completion.
Once again - could the original errors be indicative of full media?
Hello,
Please check for event logs whether there are any errors related to device.
Also if you feel that erros is due to full media please check the alerts tab for any error related to tapes.
Also to isolate the issue try taking backups on Backup to disk folder and then verify the result.
Thanks,

Backup to disk allows a full backup with no errors. Backup to tape works providing the quantity of data is limited by omitting certain directories.
The event logs have unfortunately scrolled out of range of the problems. The Alerts tab only shows jobs timiing out with the above errors, which don't seem to specifically mention tapes.
I still would have expected a more meaningful error status than a0008486 or a00084f8, which imply some sort of problem with the agents rather than the tape capacity.
