Ok so we currently fake our machines to do a nightly reboot...

i basically do a software delivery job to distribute Shutdown.exe to our machines nightly....

works usually well.. however we get times were it doesnt.. and a few people will get the reboot during the day...

now today is an exception... TONS are getting rebooted... now and then too.. cant figure out why...

so i remember I chose to not do Task Server restart and tried figuring out why...

well i just tested it... it wasnt working in the branches... worked at home office but not branches..

now i just got it working at the branches..... but now i see the other problem...

powered on and locked - works great and reboots

machine powered off - will power it back on.... then reboot - Dont want to do that....

machine not connected - machine powered on by user (laptop)... boots up.... then it forces a reboot.. dont want that either...

is there any way that i can set the task to not reboot if the computer isnt online? and dont force it when it does.. a run now type deal?

or is there a better way?

i have my software delivery shutdown set to only run at 3am but it seems that the user inventory is locking it in place... waiting for a user to login.. then inventory runs... then starts reboot...

i changed the user inventory to noon.. so person should be logged in....

i was on hold with altiris from 11:45am to 2:15pm.. hung up... came back and called back in.. back on hld... 12 minutes in...

From your Post it appears you are using Altiris 6.  If so we also run this procedure and initially had similar results.  Now it works nearly perfectly.  Every once and a while one will mess up.

I believe the key was to run it weekly and indicate which days you want it run.  Daily behaved the way you mentioned.  Also setting it to run only at scheduled time will help.

thanks.. yeah running it on a schedule... and also sticking to only run at scheduled time.. 3am.. but computers ignore this feat...

well we are setting up a GPO on the workstations container... and dropping a scheduled task in.. will see how that goes..

but if that doesnt work as well as we wish.. i will revisit the weekly and specific day idea..

    Thanks!

Hope it works out for you.

By the way,  we also wake our systems up.  While we currently use a wake on lan task.  We are converting to a BIOS wake up time.   We'll be using HP Management solution to set the settings.  The wake up cuts down on the complaints from users.

well we do a nightly reboot.. no power off then WOL... however trying to use task server or DS to do reboots.. would power the computers up if they were off... then reboot them.. or if someone brought in their laptop.. they would power it on.... login.. then they would get rebooted... hahahhaha they didnt like that much!!!
