Power Outage and embedded Bootworks partition

Created: 01 Aug 2012 • Updated: 11 Sep 2012 | 4 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

We recently had a power outage on the east coast, naturally causing the computer to shut down abnormally.  When they start up the first thing they do it boot into the embeded bootworks partition rather than the OS they were previously running.  Does anyone know why bootworks reacts this way after an abnormal shutdown?  We are running DS 6.9 and are using Win PE in our Bootworks image that is installed as a hidden embeded partition on the local hard drive.

Thanks

Just to add to masters KB link, this is by design as Altiris is a zero-touch imaging product. Only clean shutdowns will result in the MBR being reset for a production boot.

Looking at this another way, if your power outage had resulted in your production partition being corrupted, the automatic boot into Bootworks is the only way you'd be remediate these machines remotely. This is why the embedded partition immediately takes over if the production image exits uncleanly.

We see this a lot when people impatiently shutdown the machine by holding the power button...
