Premium Antispam will not update
I have Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange with the Premium Antispam on a server running Windows 2003 Small Business Server with Exchange 2003. The Premium Antispam definitions have not updated since 11/30/2009. I am not getting any errors with failed updates. The virus definitions for the Symantec Mail Security stay up-to-date. The license for the Premium Antispam shows that it is installed correctly and valid until 7/28/2010. Premium Antispam is licensed for 65 seats, and there are currently 63 users with mailboxes. Premium Antispam is enabled/turned on and is set to reject spam. Spam is still getting through because the definitions for Premium Antispam are not up-to-date. I have tried manually updating with both LiveUpdate Certified Definitions and Rapid Release Definitions. The current license had been working since July of 2009 (up until 11/30/09). Is there another way to force Premium Antispam to update?

check for ruleset corruption
HI Dtaylor-pmh,
Premium antispam uses a seperate method from the virus scanner for update of spam definitions. The "spam definitions" (also referred to as brightmail rulesets) are stored in C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server. Theyll be folders with names starting with bm_ruleset. There are currently some known issues with corruption of these rulesets that causes them to build up beyond normal operation (normally you'll see between 8-12 of these in the folder). If you see more than 12, please follow the steps in this document:
Title: 'Suspected corruption in the BM_Rulesets for Premium AntiSpam in the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange product.'

> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/docid/2006011716254054?Open&seg=ent
If those steps alone don't do it, we have the following catch-all document for dealing with missed spam in Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange:
Title: 'Premium AntiSpam for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange fails to detect spam'

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem... The Premium Antispam definitions have not updated since 11/30/2009. I have tried groberts first link.
It's not working and now every spam are not blocked... I change nothing in my settings...
I followed the directions of
I followed the directions of groberts and when I tried to reinstall my licenses I got an error about my licenses not being valid. I redownloaded the license files and got the same error. I reregistered and redownloaded new license files and got the same error. I decided to reinstall the product and downloaded the latest 6.0 version (6.0.9.286) from Symantec. Before the reinstall, I had version 5.0 installed and I now think that was my problem. I think the current license files are not compatible with the older 5.0 version.
Since reinstalling/updating, I have not had a problem with receiving updates.
Thanks for the update i have
Thanks for the update i have 4.6 version and my licence are up to date (valid)
can i install version 6 with my current licence ?
I believe so. You should be
I believe so. You should be able to run the install file for 6.0 and it should uninstall 4.6 for you and migrate your settings to 6.0 as it installs. If I remember correctly, the 6.0 installer asks you for the license file(s). If the license files are valid for the current time period, they should work with 6.0.
Hi Alhazred
If you have not all ready done so (I can't tell from your post) I would follow the steps in the second document.
If you are currently on 4.6, keep in mind that this version is very, very old, and no longer supported by our development. As a result, the rulesets are not tested against the brightmail engine used in that version, it is possible that newer rulesets will not be processed on the older version. Do not take this as a statement of fact however, just something to keep in mind.
dtaylor-pmh: Glad to hear you were able to diagnose the root cause, thats part of why I like the procedure in that catch-all document, even if the process doesn't fix the problem directly, it will usually point you in the right direction.
Hi Groberts
If i want to download version 6 the web site only offer trialware. Can i apply my licence on the trialware ?
I want to upgrade tonight because lot of spam enter in our organisation since i have deleted my ruleset.. .
Thanks
Go to the Symantec Licensing
Go to the Symantec Licensing Portal ( https://licensing.symantec.com/acctmgmt/index.jsp ) and login. Click "Get Software" and put in your serial number on the next screen. You should be able to download the full version from there.
