  • 1.  preventing my server from sending backscatter

I have a Symantec Brightmail / Mail Security for SMTP version 5.0.1 dedicated server sitting in front of my mail server.  It is the "first stop" for e-mail in my organization.  I have LDAP synchronization configured.

I would like the Brightmail server to drop the SMTP connection when an invalid recipient is detected.  I do not want it to drop the message, I want it to drop the connection immediately.  I am no e-mail guru, but my understanding is that this causes the sending server to generate an NDR back to the sender (so that none of my servers have to do this).

I do not see how to accomplish this in Brightmail.  Under Invalid Recipients, there is only a checkbox to indicate whether or not you want the software to "Drop messages for invalid recipients."  I don't want this, but it appears to be my only option.

Help me (or help me understand :-) ) please!

    Hello,

In SMTP 5 this option is not configurable. However, if you were to evaluate the hardware or virtual appliance, we have the ability to configure how we handle invalid recipients.

You should have the virtual appliance available to you with your current license. You may want to check though if this is a possible option for you.

    Thanks!
