  • 1.  Problem adding users to a Managed Software Policy that include a Software Task > Package Delivery

I am having a problem with a new Managed Software Policy. I want to setup a policy with a list of tasks which include two scripts and a few other tasks that are Software Packages (flash player, adobe reader). I am applying this policy to a list of users who will use this policy right after imaging a desktop; flash, reader will be updated and some of our standard ie links will get added which are not on my image.

I get the following message when the Software Package tasks are applied:

"8 resources are automatically excluded and not shown in the policy because they are not capable of running one or more tasks selected in the policy (see Altiris log for details about the tasks names). The policy will not be delivered to those resources. Consider removing the tasks that are causing this limitation."

If I remove the Software Package tasks, and leave the two scripts everyone is applied with no problems. It is only when I have the Software Package Tasks applied to the Policy. Are there permissions or roles that need to tweaked? I expected this to work without any problem.

I think that it's because Software Package tasks have to be applied to PCs and not users,

You might be right, I heard Altiris is more oriented toward computers as their targets, not users. But in some sitiuations I get in; targeting users on our Helpdesk is helpful instead of over targeting computers in certain areas of our IT area.

The trouble with that is, especially with helpdesk users, any PC they log in to will get the software.

Are you adding a Quick Delivery Task to a Managed Software Deliver policy?

If you add the Software itself (Component) to the policy it should target users without any issue.

Any pc will not necessarilly obtain the software, the said policy will be available in the Agent to run. I will not have any automation set, the helpdesk tech will run it manually from the agent.

What I am running are Tasks: (3) Task Scripts and (5) Package Deliveries. If I were to re-do the five Package Deliveries as Quick Deliveries or Software Resources from Software Packages could they get applied to users?

Don't add Package Delivery, or Quick Delivery tasks to your policy (what for? There even won't be a compliance check) ... just add the Software.

The Policy is doing the _Managed Software Delivery_.

Check if the clients have all the necessary plug-ins installed and also have reported back to the NS. To be able to deliver software delivery packages you have to have Software Management Solution Agent installed.
