I am running PGP Desktop version 10.0.1 on my work laptop.  When I encrypt my hard drive I can no longer back it up using Windows Home Server.  I have tried with both the original version of Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3 and the new version Windows Home Server 2011 RC.  With the new version I have even tried to just setup the backup to do specific folders like My Documents.  When my hard drive is encrypted it will hang my laptop after the backup has started and I have to power cycle it to get it back up.  If I decrypt my hard drive the backup works fine.  So I know the encryption is the problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how I can get my backups to work?

What backup application are you using?

I am using Microsoft's Windows Home Server as my backup application.  It has a connector client that you install on all your computers you want to back to it.  I have been using it for a few years.  I think my problem is with something that PGP 10.0.1 does differently then previous versions.  I had to rebuild my work computer and think my company has upgraded the PGP application.  Do not have a way to verify but think I was previously running version 9.x.x and it was backing up successfully to my Windows Home Server.

With most of the earlier versions of the 10.x series we had problems with backup software that uses the Windows volume shadow copy service. I'd be shocked if the Windows server did not use this service. Releases prior to 10.0.1 HF 2 and or 10.0.3 will experience issues when used in conjunction with most backup software. The current version of PGP Desktop (10.1.1) should not be affected by this. I believe you should be able to get the 10.1.0 or 10.1.1 version through https://fileconnect.symantec.com/.

Yes Windows Home Server does use the volume shadow copy service.  So it looks like my issue is with the version of PGP that my company is using.  Unfortantely I don't have an option to upgrade to the newer versions at this time.  I have found some information that looks like 10.1.x might be able in a few months.  Will try to remember to post back in this form after I am able to upgrade and let people know if this did solve my issue.  I do appreciate the feedback.
