Hi,

I have a windows Server 2008 with NetBackup 7.0.1 client installed. It also has NetApp SnapDrive 6.0.1 running with NetApp LUNs attached. Every time the backup job launches, it failed within 5-6 minutes with error: 1: (74) client timed out waiting for bpstart_notify to complete.

C:\>vssadmin list providers
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
   Provider type: System
   Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
   Version: 1.0.0.7

Provider name: 'Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider'
   Provider type: Hardware
   Provider Id: {ddd3d232-a96f-4ac5-8f7b-250fd91fd102}
   Version: 6. 0. 1. 2386

Service "Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider " is set to manual and is not currently started. Service "SnapDrive" is set to automatic and is running

My other Windows Server 2008 without SnapDrive are backed up fine. So I suspect 'Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider' caused the timeout. I also tried to ask NetBackup to only back up C:\ drive (which is internal local drive) explicitly but resulted the same. Has anyone had experience with this setup and how to resolve this?

Thank you.

There is a related technote about choosing which VSS provider to use for backup

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH156732

But it has to be on Netbackup 7.1 onwards to use the above solution.

If you can disable the Data OnTap VSS Hardware provider service, would Netbackup try to use the default Microsoft VSS instead?
