still monitoring clients and showing various statistics as before
latest symantec version: 2009-05-29 rev 03 shows under virus def dist on home page
over the last week or so, more and more clients are showing "other" in the same field . . .

Any ideas?

check the clients in the other field, may be these clients are not connected in the network and hence they are not getting latest definitions.

Also, clients tab in SEPM, check if clients with old definitions have a green dot and what was their last check in time.

sepm shows all clients checked in today at 11
client system logs show various dates w/in same sepm group for defn file loaded:
w/in 1 group: several machines show uploads 5/18; 5/21; 5/26
                         other machins show 5/21; 5/27; 5/28
machines in other groups also show variation w/in and accross groups

What is the defs version showing in the clients end and innthe manager? are they same??? If not try out wether the communication between the clients and SEPM is perfect or not?

What is the definiton version on SEPM.On home page it shows latest Symantec version and latest SEPM version.Check if SEPM is downloading the latest definitons.
If not run maual LUALL and check what error you are getting.
