  • 1.  Problem getting license key for OEM'd Endpoint Protection from Dell

I need assistance from someone at Symantec familiar with the process used to fulfill license key requests from OEM partners, specifically Dell.

I have a Dell server (used for development and testing only) that originally shipped with Symantec CAV 8.0, which went EOL last year. I called Symantec and was told that since it was an OEM license I would have to contact Dell. I first checked for an upgrade for that specific system (by its service tag) and found nothing. I couldn't find anything  elsewhere on the Dell site either, and surprisingly, no relevant discussions in the PowerEdge forums. Then the server had a drive failurw, so I shut it down until after the holidays. I decided to do a complete reinstall after replacing the drive.

In any case, in March I finally got Dell to locate an SKU for an upgrade to EP 11.0 with a 3 year subscription ("PROMO 36MO UPG-V ENDPOINT PROT 11.0 BNDL LIC ESSEN EXP BA"). [Note: It's not clear why the Dell sales rep didn't find an SKU for version 12.] This order has now been placed twice. On both occasions, I received the media package only, and upon checking the order found that the subscription had been removed, and the amount of the order adjusted accordingly. Needless to say, without a license key for the subscription the software is useless. I have been going back and forth with Dell customer service about this for 6 weeks.

As an enterprise architect (J2EE), I suspected that one or more web services are involved in the fulfillment process between Dell's and Symantec's servers, and that a service on the Symantec side was either failing silently, or was returning a SOAP fault which led to the modification of the orders.

As I was composing this, I got a call from one of the Dell supervisors. He told me the SKU for the subscription had been a promotional SKU, and we assume the promotional period has expired. Further, he can find no SKU in the Dell system for a similar subscription at a regular price. He is going to check with people at both Dell and Symantec as to how to proceed.

So now my question is, since I held a Symantec CAV license, why wan't I notified of any upgrade promotions (for versions 9, 10 or 11) by either Symantec or Dell, even in the form of marketing? Can anyone tell me what the period was for the promotion? And finally, is there a similar upgrade from 11 to 12 available to me now?

For these questions, I would call try calling licensing at 1800-721-3934 and select option 2. As for upgrading, SEP 11 and SEP 12 are different products. SEP 12 is a stripped down version with no bells and whistles,  and is geared for a small business with less than 100 nodes.

Thanks - that's actually what I need. It's the only server, and is used only for development and testing. It has no connected workstations. Since I have an OEM license, though, I'll probably have to get it thru Dell to get a version upgrade price.

SEP 11.0 and SEP 12.0 is a different product. SEP 11.0 does not require a license key/file for activation while SPE 12.0 does require activation.  If you have SEP 11.0 and want to get SEP 12.0, crossgrade or migration process need to be done. Better call Customer Care (Licensing Team) for yourrecord to be check first.
