Hi, I have been trying to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection manually as described here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH161956.

I am now trying to remove it from the registry and when I try to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection, I get an "Error when deleting the key".

    What do I do now?

Is the client still installed or did you already remove thru add/remove programs and it left some things behind?

Have you tried Cleanwipe? This should easily do it

Cleanwipe tool will be much better than the manual uninstall - you can find the tool on the part2 file of the SEP 12.1 ru4 installation:

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.4_Part2_Tools_EN\CleanWipe

This version supports as well RU4 and all older releases of SEP.

I believe some things are still left behind. Have not tried Cleanwipe. Would I need to contact support?

Do I have to contact support first for the Cleanwipe utility?

Did you try deleting that key after a reboot and giving full permission?

If you have RU4 installation disc not necessary, if you don't please do contact the support. Just make sure to mention to them you need the newest version of cleanwipe.

    Hi,

Let me know in case you did not receive credentials to download Cleanwipe tool. Share the case number with me and I can look into it.

While running cleanwipe you may need to reboot the system.

    Hi,

This is not related to any server management or any Symantec support. I an a private user of SEP 11.0.1000.1375 that is probably 5 years out of date already but I continue to receive all AV and signature updates and never had a virus issue in 7 years. I consulted for a US oil company that send me this (complete) SEP version (free, without a license) and then went out of business shortly after.

My question to this forum: I am retired and not interested in buying AV software as MS Defender in Vista SP2 is doing (most of) that and I only e-mail to trusted parties. Is there any point to continue using this old version of SEP or should I remove it to gain more disk space? I have e-mail disabled in SEP because it was giving me problems with a recently installed SSL protocol (YAHOO) in Outlook2007 so I just use it for my "system protection" (not even sure if that is still working). Also get this message from Vista Security Center that SEP is reporting in a format that is no longer compatible so SEP may just be sitting there doing nothing (occupying space).

    Thanks

Frank you should get rid of SEP 11.  It's at EOL.

If you are in the consumer only user space, you may also want to check with your ISP.  Comcast, AT&T, Verizon all provide a free consumer AV/Security product that is above and beyond the basings of Defender.  You can get by if you safely browse, some consider it bloat, but I have confidence in providing it for general users who want email and web protection. Norton, provided by Comcast, also has system tuners.  I've set up schedules for many family members and have not had as many family service calls.
