    Posted Nov 08, 2011 08:36 PM

I'm going through the "Altiris IT Management Suite from Symantec Migration Guide 6.x to 7.1" document to emmulate a migration. I am not using production servers in this test.

I have exported the data from my Test 6.x NS 3 times and consitantly get the same message when the Migration Wizard completes. I recieve and error on the line for

"Patch Management Solution for Windows: Patch Management Package Items SQL Data Exporter" Status = Failed  Durration = 2 Seconds.

When I continue to the next steps, the Migration Wizard on the Test 7.1 NS runs to import the data it does not import the packages for the Windows Patches.  No where in the wizard imported does it list the patches.

How can I find out where the problem is? Is there a SQL command I need to run prior to the Wizard export?

Thanks for your looking at my post.

Although typically this would be important, Patch Management has changed completely in 7.1 SP1.  As a result, all policies and patches are invalid and must be re-staged and new policies applied.  Even if you were able to get the data out of NS 6.x, it would do you no good in 7.1 SP1, unfortunately.  Even folks migrating from 7.0 or 7.1 to 7.1 SP1 must recreate all policies.

    Does this answer your question?

So Patches would have to be recreated. What about the Package servers in the remote offices? Will they have to redownload all the MS Patches? What else doesn't work with the Migratrion Wizard with NS 7.1 SP1? My second concern is SW Delivery Packages (I need to bring over about 160 sw packages).  Is my best to just tell the 6.x agents to switch to a new 7.1 NS?  and build new SW and Patch packages and package servers?

    Thanks for your input Mike.

Yes, the package servers will need to re-download all of the Microsoft patches.  Most of the time, folks choose to build a new 7.1 NS and redirect clients from NS6 to NS 7.1, where they've recreated any necessary software deliveries.

Check out the section titled '6.0 > 7.1 Migration - Detailed Information' here:
    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/altiris-endpoint-management-migrations-and-upgrades-71-0

There's very much information there on migrating from 6.x to 7.1 if you choose to do it alone.

Okay for migrating Patches is pointless. Is there any limitations to migrating SW Delivery Packages and the inventory records from the PC's?

    Thank you

Packages are a bit different in 7, so for most folks I recommend they reimport the files so they can go through the proper process of setting up company, product, detection rules, associations, naming, and so forth.  Inventory can be migrated from the database, and the need to do so (e.g. what inventory, how much to transfer) is driven by business requirements (regulatory, etc).
