I work from home telecommuting to a Unix server in NC from a laptop in NM.  Every day for from half an hour to an hour I cannot work (literally) because something is hammering my DSL connection.  Our system admin says it is the Symantec Endpoint Protection loading virus protection updates.  If this is so I wonder whether some state is not getting updated so that the software has to start from scratch each day.  Even so, why does the software have to be such a hog.  Could it not put in wait states so that other network traffic can happen while it is doing this?  If it turns out to be the Symantec software then it is acting like a virus itself.  Has anyone met this and is there a simple fix?  I am not one to do updates when a piece of software says "new updates are available" because honestly I would prefer a stable system.  So maybe this is an issue that has been fixed.  Would be happy to hear whether this is likely the Symantec software and how to put things straight.  Thanks.  Windows Vista.  Not obvious how to get version number from the Endpoint software.

If the client is updated on a daily basis , then it only download the delta which is a few hundred kbs.

Check if the cleint is downloading in kbs or in Mbs

Also if you want you can change the LU schedule to fit your need.
