  • 1.  Problem upgrading to 10.1.8.8000

    Posted Dec 04, 2008 03:02 PM

Any attempt to upgrade from 10.1.7.7000 to 10.1.8.8000 with Norton SystemWorks 2004 installed results in the following event log on the client:

Product: Symantec AntiVirus -- Norton AntiVirus Works 2006 has been detected. Please first uninstall NAV 2006 before attempting this install.

We don't even have SystemWorks 2006 nor Norton Antivirus (any version) installed

Only SystemWorks2004 and only the Norton Utilities are installed, that's it..

Is there any way to make the installer ignore / bypass this check without having to uninstall NSW?

We never had this problem upgrading 10.1.x in the past until we tried upgrading to the new 10.1.8.8000

    Thanks

    NSW2006 is not installed

Only NSW2004 and ONLY the Norton Utilities.

Like I said, NSW2004 was installed years ago

Upgraded SAV 10.1.x numerous times since then and now .8.8000 is going to complain and fail to upgrade.

    Hi,

Very strange that the problem now comes up with the new release. I don't exactly know where the installed softwares are check but I have a pretty good guess :) So if you would export from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall everything about that Norton  product that is causing the problem and then try the upgrade. After installation just copy the uninstall information back to registry.

I won't take any responsibility of the outcome, as messing with registry is always risky! :D

    Hi Jukka,

    Thank you for the resonse.

Yes, I'm very familiar with registry manipulation.

I did try removing Norton Utilities & NSW uninstall keys (exported them first to be safe)

The SAV .8.8000 installer still complained.

I used the MS Installer Cleanup utility to remove the NSW 2004 entry from the installer database.

This allows the SAV installer to upgrade with no problems.

Yet now this particular PC no longer has the ability to remove NSW without using the Norton Removal Tool

    LOL!!!!

    :)

As it stands, the only features of NSW we use are WinDoctor and Speed Disk.

Since updating the core SAV engine is more critical than WinDoctor and Speed Disk (since there are other registry cleanup and disk deframent tools available). I might be forced to uninstall NSW on the other PCs.

Although, we'd prefer to keep NSW if at all possible.

    Thanks.
