Problem w/ backup exec version 9.1 hanging on exchange 2000 mailbox backup
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 28 comments
I have followed the technical suggestions from Symantec/Veritas from this thread: http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?...
No change - Exchange mailbox backups STILL hang - and it never displays any error messages. I enabled debugging on the remote. Please provide an email address that I can send this to so that usernames/etc are not compromised.

Hi,
Please ensure that the Antivirus mode is the MAPI mode as per :
Slow throughput while backing up Microsoft Exchange mailboxes
http://support.veritas.com/docs/264851
Are any of the mailboxes belong to disabled users in Active Directory?

I will check this and get back to you. Thanx
Hi,
We await an update from your side...

This was configured as it should be... problem remains. Any other suggestions?
Also, none of the disabled users have email accounts.
A screenshot of the active job progress window can be found here: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=downl...
This file is only available for the next 7 days. Should you need to access this beyond the 7 day period, please let me know and I will repost. Thanx.
Hello,
The screenshot is on seen...
Could you update us on the current issue....

I am not sure what you are asking. It is a link to the screenshot - you just have to download it.
It worked for me when I pulled it down just now and I was able to see the screenshot as I intended. Basically the screenshot shows a backup job that is supposedly running but it is not - there is no file progress, there are no active files being backed up, etc.
No answer yet... ??
Hi,
Please resend that screenshot on that link... so that we can again view it !
Have you also srated the job in debug mode ?
Is it always hangs on the last mailbox user ?
Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you
Thank you
Gauri

OK - the backup NEVER backs up ANY MAILBOXES - I configured a SEPARATE backup job JUST FOR THE MAILBOXES and I get the screenshot seen here (you will have to DOWNLOAD it): http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=downl...
Also, if you will read my 1st post, you will see that I did indeed run in debug mode. I need a way to share the results of that debug that will not compromise usernames/mailbox names in any way (as I said, an email address where I can send the debug would be a great place to start!)
Thank you.
NO ANSWER?
Hi,
Is exchange in cluster?
Have you set the following registry key to 1 on exchange server?
HKey_Local_Machine > Software > VERITAS > Backup Exec > Engine > Exchange > Bypass MBox properties

No, it is not in a cluster.
That suggestion did not work.
Two things to check out:
1) Can you back up ANY mailboxes either seperately or in groups. Do you get ANY byte count with any of these mailbox backups. If you can't back up anything, there is likely a problem with making the MAPI connection/creating the MAPI profile.
2) If you can back up mailboxes but you can't pin the hang issue on any particular mailbox or if it hangs on the last mailbox no matter what group you try to back up then there may be an Exchange configuration problem. Use the following steps to help make sure everything is proper:
If Exchange is on a DC, then that server must also be the Global Catalog Server
Be sure that the Infrastructure Master is not on the Global catalog Server
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;... for more information like
The following list summarizes the recommendations for placement of Active Directory domain controllers and global catalog servers to support your Exchange organization:
Make sure that DNS is correctly configured at the hub site and on all branches.
Make sure that name resolution and DNS functionality are both operating correctly.
Make sure that the infrastructure master role is not on a global catalog server.
In branch offices that service more than 10 users, one global catalog server must be installed in each location that contains Exchange servers, and Microsoft recommends that you deploy two global catalog servers for redundancy. If a physical site does not have two global catalog servers, you can configure existing domain controllers as global catalog servers.
Mailbox hang issues can be a real pain since there are so many places where problems can reside... By the way, have mailbox backups ever worked in your environment?
Q: 1) Can you back up ANY mailboxes either seperately or in groups. Do you get ANY byte count with any of these mailbox backups. If you can't back up anything, there is likely a problem with making the MAPI connection/creating the MAPI profile.
A: NO, you get NO byte count and it does not allow us to backup any mailboxes, whether we breakup the backup jobs to back them up individually or as a group.
Q: By the way, have mailbox backups ever worked in your environment?
A: Yes, up until about 2 weeks before I started this thread.
NOTHING changed as far as the hardware. No patches were applied.
No answers yet... still waiting...
Can you backup one mailbox via a new job ? If not, what do the windows and BE logfiles say ? Your Exchange server is not configured for automatic Windows update ?
What is the reason for the mailbox backup, disaster recovery (mailbox backup is the wrong choice for this) or user convenience (I would opt for extending the retention time so users can retrieve their deleted email) ?
Just my E0.02

Q: Can you backup one mailbox via a new job ?
A: NO - we tried that.
What do the logs say? Windows says nothing... the BE logs have information in there containing usernames (mailboxes) and I have been trying to get someone at Symantec to give me an email address that I can send these logs to so that I don't post them publicly (trying to be security-conscious).
Anyway, the reason for the mailbox backup is unclear to me - I am actually posting for another engineer that is seldom here at the office (always out in the field) and is hard to get in touch with. All I know is that he has been trying to do these backup jobs which, as I have said in my previous posts, USED TO WORK.

Hello,
Which account is used to backup this mailbox ? What rights have been assigned to it ??
Kindly update.

An admin account with full admin privileges - rights to everything.
Hi Robin,
I would hate to bring up something simple, but try uninstalling your virus scanner (if you have one). Just disabling it probably won't do. If your scanner isn't fully Exchange aware (and don't trust anyone who just says that theirs is) then this is exactly the kind of issue you will experience.
As a second solution, I would suggest checking whether you have a good database to begin with. By that, I mean you will want to run both:
eseutil /g
isinteg -test alltests -fix
You will need to do some reason on these commands, and take your system offline first. Again, if you have any tiny corruption, it will cause exactly the issue you are seeing.
Hello,
Run the sgmon before running the backup job.
How to create SGMON.LOG

Hi and thanks for your suggestions...
First off, we did end up taking the AV software completely off.
Secondly, I will have the engineer that works onsite try these commands to see what happens.
Thank you!!!!
Hi Robin,
Do keep us updated on the progress of the issue.
Thanks!
