This issue has been solved. See solution.

Looking for suggestions to resolve consistent job failures (error messages below) backing up System State files on a Windows 2003 R2, x86, server using Backup Exec 2010 R3, SP2 (with hotfixes applied).  Backup destination is an external USB hard drive.

Error message:
Backup- System?StateV-79-57344-652

47 - A failure occurred reading an object.
and...
Backup- System?StateWARNING: "System?State\System Files\System Files" is a corrupt file. This file cannot verify.

- Not running McAfee
- Backup of System State using MS backup generates no errors.
- Problem occurs with or without Symantec Endpoint Protection services enabled.
- Problem occurs with or without Advanced Open File Option enabled.
- No Exchange server
- Single server environment
- Backups run fine without including System State in backup selections.

I've applied MS KB940349 (VSS hotfix) - no change in backup of system state.

Next I uninstalled and reinstalled SBE 2010 R3, SP2, with patches.  No change - system state fails with same error code E000FEDF.

SBE job debug log contains:

BEREMOTE: [04/30/13 22:27:11] [7212]     [fsys\systemstate]   -   AD:Status FS_READING_OBJECT_FAILURE (0xE000FEDF) calling FS_ReadObj in SystemState::ReadObj:259

I have very little hair left and my forehead has been flattened by repetitive banging against the wall.  If you have a suggestion I'm all ears!

...matter of interest, but do you get the same error if you backup to a B2D that is local to the server?

Run a test of the System State to a B2D on the C:\ drive for instance and report back here.

Thanks!

job log and debug logs attached.

Backup to c:\temp produces the same error:

Backup- System?StateV-79-57344-65247 - A failure occurred reading an object.

Hello all,

The problem turned out to be hardware related.  After replacing the three hard drives and restoring from an image backup, Backup Exec is working properly.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Sincerely,

Peter
