  • 1.  Problems creating filers / deploying policies with dependencies

Hi, We're new to v7.5 of the console.

previously we've had 6.x (I say previously we still have this and want to migrate everything to 7.5)

We've had someone in to set up the pilot, but they have gone and I'm having problems with a couple of things

Previously we've had collections where for example it would be populated using the query option and resource type "Computer" and the filter type would be looking at (table) Inv_AeX_OS_Add_Remove_Programs and "name like" %Software we want%

Likewise we would have other collections which may look at (Table) Inv_AeX_AC_NT_Services with name = %service we're looking for%

Or using these querys / tables, finding computers with specific file names / locations

How would I create similar filters in 7.5? Because various people will be need to look at Altiris to get this type of info, I'm trying to recreate a similar look on the new version.

2 question - I've created a policy with dependies to another piece of software, and also an update task. They are all checked on the policy tasks.

On the client machines, for that 1 peice of software, the dependency task, the main software task, and the patch, all appear as 3 Pre-download detection tasks, along with an applicability check, then the 3 tasks to download and excecute the installs for them all.

However if I run the softwar install task, only the 3 pre-download detection and applicability tasks run (and coming back as not dectected) It doesn't progress to downloading or even excecuting the installs.

    What am I missing?

    Many Thanks in Advance,

o.k scratch question 2, that's something to with the patch to the software and how I've applied it, the question is on the filters / collections

    1. You can create a filter based on criteria, the first thing you have to do when you create a new filter is change the Resource Type to Computer.

    2. If the Applicability rule fails the whole Policy will stop unless the Advanced option of that Software Resource is set to Continue on failure.

Thanks for that, I'm still having difficulties with the filters.. I've seen lots of posts with the raw SQL commands, but I can't see how to recreate them in a similar way to 6.x which I find much simpler (See attachment) is it possible? I'm guessing I'm missing something really obvious, a screenshot would really help me if it is.

    Thanks

When you create a new filter you select the "Query Mode" at the top; "None", "Query Builder" or "Raw SQL".

"Raw SQL" lets you put in the SQL you've found. To get the corresponding type for the image you posted you need "Query Builder". Then, in the "Query" tab, select "Base Query" and change the "Base Resource Type" to "Computer". Then go to the "Filter Expressions" tab and you can build up the query you want.

Edit: There was a version of the Symantec Management Platform where this facility was broken, 7.1 SP1 maybe.

If you are looking for an easy way to create custom filters, then you may want to upgrade to 7.5 Sp1. With agent backward compatibility you dont necessarily need to upgrade the agents either so might not be such a task.

The "saved search" function in the activity center, is now the filter creater, so with no SQL knowledge you can create the filters and then view the SQL and build on this if necessary.

Check out the whats new in 7.5 sp1 presentation, should show you more
