Problems running Wise for Windows Installer 7 on Windows Server 2008

This issue has been solved. See solution.

We have been running Wise on a system with Windows Server 2003 with no problems, but after a hardware problem we moved to a new system with Windows Server 2008 SP2. In installed Wise while logged on as an administrative user and was able to run the software just fine, but when another administrative user logs on to the same system and tries to run it, one of two things happens. Either the Wise for Windows Installer crashes on start up with an exception code 0xc0000005 reported in the event viewer, or a dialog appears indicating: "A corrupt or invalid license file was detected. Please reinstall this software". I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, but still can only run the software when logged in as the original user who installed it. If it can only be run by a single user, my preference would be to re-install and set up as a multi-user login that we have defined. Can anyone help with this?

This is normal....

Wise installs as a per user, it's licensing also requires that you have a license per user. Either create an Account with the correct permissions and install it using that account, or you can "fix" the installation so that it is installed per machine.

Cheers
Phil

Yes, the licensing

Yes, the licensing information is tied to the user profile of the account which installed WIS7 - this is common to all Wise products. A multi user login will require purchase of a license for each user.

So how do I completely

So how do I completely uninstall under one user and get the other user set up properly?  I set up the other account, uninstalled using the first user and installed on the second, but the program still crashes when attempting to run it.  In this instance, there is no license error, just a crash.

Turn off UAC first

You have followed the correct sequence in uninstalling the original instance, then changing user and reinstalling, but I would recommend two further actions:

1. Disable UAC for the install phase
or
2. Ensure that you run the install "as administrator", as users in Windows Server 2008 SP2 and also in Windows 7, do not have admin rights by default, even if the accounts are administrator account. You have to have UAC elevation first, or turn UAC off.

Also, are you installing WIS7 or WIS7 SP1 ??

Was your Windows 2003 server 32 bit or 64 bit?  I'm assuming you are now on a 64 bit system as I don't believe Server 2008 R2 is available for 32 bit systems.

Do not confuse Server 2008

Do not confuse Server 2008 SP2 with R2. Server 2008 SP2 is the same Service Pack as Vista SP2 (it is even the same installation package).

Server 2008 R2 on the other hand is a new generation where the kernel and varoius runtimes are about the same as in Windows 7.

My mistake - I read it as R2

My mistake - I read it as R2 and not SP2.

Thank you for the

Thank you for the clarification on Server 2008.  We are running Server 2008 R2 and it is 64 bit.

I did follow the sequence of uninstalling for the first user, even rebooting the system, then logging on as the second user and successfully running the installation.  The problem is, program consistently crashes on startup for the new user.  There is no license error for this user, a wait cursor appears for a few seconds, then an event is thrown in the event viewer.

Faulting application name: WfWI.exe, version: 7.3.0.250, time stamp: 0x47435210
Faulting module name: WfWI.exe, version: 7.3.0.250, time stamp: 0x47435210
Exception code: 0xc0000005

I verified by logging back on as the first user that the license dialog appears there, indicating the license is no longer valid for the first user, which is what I expected.

Basically, it appears that

Basically, it appears that something is leftover during the uninstall process (possibly some licensing files/settings) that prevent the software from running when reinstalled by the second user, but I have been unable to isolate what it is.

Possible problem with Wise uninstall process

OK, We figured it out.  Here is what we had to do:
Uninstall Wise from the first user
Log on as some other admistrative user and delete the user profile for both Wise users.
Log on as the second user and install Wise.

This implies that the Wise uninstall process leaves something behind in the user profile settings that prevents the program from running after being reinstalled by another user.  This does not seem like proper software behavior.

WIS 7 SP1 was released way

WIS 7 SP1 was released way before either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 - even before 64 bit operating systems became popular, so there is no official support for the setup you have.

The behaviour you have observed is not typical of the operation on XP, for example, but hopefully the next service release will address any compatibility issues you may experience.
