Procedure question on removing filters from policies

Hello all,

We have an environment using Altiris Notification Server Version 7.1.6851 (no Service pack, and Windows based), and I would like to use nested filters to manage our Patching policies.  My question revolves around a co-worker talking about a situation where removing filters from a patching policy crossed up and damaged a database on an earlier version of Altiris.  The version was in the ver 6 era, but it has become imperative that I confirm this story before we can move forward with our planning of the process.

So in the simplest of terms...We would like to place 3 static filters in all of our patching policies, and then be able to add/remove filters in those static filters every month as new patches come out.  Does Altiris Notification Server support that, or does it still confuse the DB?

The main reason being that we have over 400 servers and I would prefer not to go back and add 20 plus filters to every new Policy created.  Also, if you think there is a better option than using Nested filters, I would love to hear it.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

This is totally fine.  I have implemented this exact patching method at several clients of ours.  To clarify who was included in test, pilot, production, and manual updating, we used several "meta" filters of sorts -- Patch Test, Patch Pilot, Patch Production, Patch Manual.  And then each of these filters consisted only of other filters specifically included.  So Patch Test might include the filters Application Testers, IT Testers, Test Lab A, Test Lab B.  PIlot then included 'Patch Test' plus other filters.

Does this answer your question?
