Hi,
When the PST locator task is run does it firsly locate all machines in active directory before it starts scanning for pst's. I have it configured to scan active directory and to scan the computer registry. So far its built up a list of machines but no pst locations yet. Do I just need to be more patient? No errors are been reported in the event log.
Oh an why is it recommeded that the evault service account is not a domain admin?
cheers

Yes, PST Locator has multiple

Yes, PST Locator has multiple "run modes", one is for searching for domains, one for computers, one for registry scan, one for filesystem scan.
Try running it manually (right click it -> run now), you should be able to choose what to do then.

It's recommended for instance because Domain Admins are usually denied send/receive in exchange, and probably other reasons, i.e. security.

oh yes that is right Michael

oh yes that is right Michael about the Exchange permissions.
I am running the PST Locator manually with domain and registry scan and to include any new computers detected. It is running a few hours now and seems to be still building computer list, no pst files showing up yet under files
Thanks

Its now started to find the PST files, patience is virtue. However I have noticed that there is a few errors in the event log stateing

PST file access error occurred

pst file: file location

I can access the location fine. Only the locator task is running. Does the locator access the pst or test them in some way. If that is so I might assume that these psts may be corrupted or over 2gb limit?

There are a number of reasons

There are a number of reasons why you see that,  permissions set on the folder that has the PST for one,  but I think the most basic one occurs when Windows Firewall is enabled on a client.   Pretty sure there is a TechNote around on that.  I'll see if I can find it.   Also, look at the downloads portion of this site as there are quite a few good whitepapers and guides on PST migration that have alot of information.

I dont think permissions are

I dont think permissions are an issue on the folder as I can browse to the folder using the same permisisons the locator task is using. Also there are other pst's in the same location that it does not complain about

And you are sure that only

And you are sure that only the Locator is running?

I'm not sure why the locator would complain about this.
Locator is only there to "find" the PST Files.
The Collector would access them and copy them.
The Migrator then migrates them from the holding are.

You may just want to try out the collector and see what it does.. ?

Cheers
